Photograph of man surrounded by bayonets - what's the origin?

Does anybody know the origin of this photo: http://de.acidcow.com/pics/20130204/fails_21.jpg ?

It shows a white-haired older man surrounded by men with rifles & bayonets pointed at his neck. It’s been around the Internetz for years but my friend and I are curious about it’s origin - was it real or staged? Who are those people??

Google image search returns Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle, Sr.

Damn! A guy with the names Drexel and Biddle. His blood must be cobalt blue.

Link didn’t work – I think it needs a period on the end, like so:

Note this excerpt:

Bolding mine.

His daughter married Angier Duke.

She wrote a book about him called My Philadelphia Father - very interesting reading. It was turned into the Walt Disney film The Happiest Millionaire.

Those people must crap money.

The next moment in the picture is the man shouting “Fire!” as he ducks.
