Photos on Facebook

How can I download someone’s photos on Facebook to my hard drive or to put on a dvd? For example, my Son posted a lot of photos of his trip to the Philippines, but I cannot retrieve them to save on my Hard Disk.

In Firefox, right click on the image, and choose “Save Image As”.

Have you considered asking your son for a DVD or CD of the images?

You did not state your computer’s operating system but in Windows if you right-click on an image the dropdown box should allow you to download an image.

Right. That isn’t just for Facebook though. You can do that with most web pictures. Once you have the image saved, you can do other things with it like crop it or correct colors and red eye with photo editing software. Lots of people like to have printed photos as well instead of just having them on your computer. Large chain stores like Target and pharmacies like CVS have services on the web in which you just attach your computer photos and have them ready for pickup at a nearby location. It is very cheap for 4x6 prints and only costs less than 20 cents a print.

The reason I point that out is a lot of casual computer users, especially older ones, do want to be dependent on a computer to look at the photos and they don’t realize how easy and cheap it is to turn them into prints as well. Facebook combined with those services makes many grandparents happy.

Can you even see them?

Nitpicks: This is dependent on your browser as well as your operating system (though I don’t know of any that don’t offer this feature), and it’s a context menu, not a drop-down list. A drop-down is something like the font or size selector for your posts here (i.e., there’s a box with an arrow to expand your options).

A lot of sites are getting better and better at preventing downloads. One trick I see a lot is putting photos as background images and hiding them in complex CSS style sheets. You can find them in the CSS sheets but it takes a bit of sluething to do.

Another way is a simple javascript that cuts the photo up into 5 to 5,000 pieces. Then it assembles it for viewing. This technique isn’t used a lot as older browsers can take too long to reassemble them

Of course you can always fall back on doing a print screen (hit Prt Scr or “Prt Scr + Shift”

They can also use some obscenely annoying bit of Javascript that completely disables context menus. But there are ways around that, too.

All of this is a moot point for Facebook, where you can in fact simply do a right-click, save-as.

Keep in mind that images on facebook are reduced in size and quality. If you want quality versions of those images have your son mail you a CD or put a ZIP file online for you to download.

Oh yes, that works for me. I feel a little stupid sometimes. I should have known that.:o

You’re welcome. As they say, there are no stupid questions.

Oh, the photos from facebook are 720x540 which is good enough for me. Thanks for all your suggestions.
