To each other. I’m well beyond “love your face” territory.
I hate it. It stems from a wish to be one-up, in my view.
To support this theory: do people say “I appreciate you” to their boss when their boss does something for them? Or do they say ‘thanks, I appreciate that’ (or the like)?
I don’t think anyone says “I appreciate you” to someone who clearly outranks them in status–just to people who are within the same general status ranking. Saying it is a way of saying ‘I’m more important than you and in a position to graciously make a kind remark to you, you underling you.’
(Granted, I may be over-thinking this—but if it’s true that people seldom use the phrase to those who outrank them, then my theory may have some merit.)
There is, I’ve noticed, a tendency for all English speakers (including me) to regard their own dialect, pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary as flawless and self- consistent, and to judge other examples as incorrect or inconsistent or wrong.
Reality: English is a mess. Every version of it is a mess. My dialect is a mess. Your dialect is a mess. None of this is your fault or my fault - it was a mess before we arrived on scene and there is no way to fix it now without breaking it. We’re just unaware of how messy it is because we’re used to it.
But you do have a cool new avatar. I appreciate that.

OMG - synergy.
I’ve degloved people - whole - when they’ve dared using that one around me.
“Salient” is suddenly…salient. I find myself using it, and hate myself for it. Its not inherently terrible, but it will go down in history as so 2022. The podcasters at FiveThirtyEight were taking bets on how long they could go without saying it, and it wasn’t long.
Synergy is still big? That’s such a late 90s/early 00s corporate speak word; I remember we made fun of it back in 1999 at the business paper I used to work at. I thought it would have run its course by now – I don’t hear it very often, but I don’t run in corporate circles anymore. It’s too bad, because “synergy” actually is a nifty word.
I wonder if “salient” will synergistically breathe new life into “synergy”, prolonging its salience in day-to-day CorpSpeak? 
How are people using salient these days? Somehow it hasn’t reached me yet.
They’re using “salient” to mean “a propos,” “relevant,” “important now,” “happening,” “actively connected to the thing we’ve been talking about.”
Well at least that’s somewhat c ose to the meaning. But I do hate it when everyone starts overusing a word just because they heard someone else say it.

Saw another use of “holistic” today to describe a women’s medical clinic that relies heavily on woo.
I’m bewildered though that the clinic considers Botox injections and laser hair removal to be “holistic”.
“Holistic” = “All about spoiled meee11!!111!!”
Well it wouldn’t be holistic if YOU did it. You have the wrong aura.
