What seems most likely to me is that the video was faked. Assuming it wasn’t, though, it’s possible that the guy didn’t lost consciousness, but was in so much pain that he couldn’t hold himself upright any longer.
The kidney circulates a lot of blood. If the kidney ruptured, the person would have a retro-peritoneal bleed, dropping their blood pressure, causing unconsciousness.
Wow, I thought I was going to see a boxing match where someone threw an illegal punch. That was pretty nasty and completely uncalled for. I wonder what the context was.
I’m not sure why people think this was faked. That was a bare-knuckled punch to the kidney and that guy looked like he just collapsed after a few seconds. There’s a reason that punch is illegal in boxing.
More importantly the kidneys are the primary organs in regulating blood pressure. A blow to the kidneys could mess that system up prety badly leading to the release of a several hormones that would play merry hell with blood pressure.
First, I’d like to say that the video is probably real and it definitely pissed me off. Random violence is one thing, but abuse of authority is always abhorrent to me.
A solid blow to the kidney is extremely painful, to the point where it is reportedly almost impossible to talk, or even to think very clearly. Army manuals advocate a thrust to the kidneys when taking out a sentry from behind precisely because it’s that debilitating. The closest I’ve come to experiencing this personally was from a kick that I took mostly on the ribs. I’d rather get punched in the stomach. It #^¢*ing HURT. In high school, one of my teammates on the diving team had to spend a couple of days in bed with some pretty heavy pain meds due to severe back pain and bloody urination. The doctor’s diagnosis was slight bruising of the kidneys caused by his jumping on a trampoline a little too much. That gives you some idea of how delicate your kidneys are.
It was probably pain and shock that caused him to pass out. You don’t really have to be more specific than that. People go face down from shock even when they’re not badly wounded or in any real pain. Would I count on a blow to the kidneys to knock out an opponent. No. But I would bet on it least partially incapacitating him.
If you are practicing kidney strikes with a partner in training, be very careful. It is possible for someone to die from kidney injuries caused by a punch or kick, and it’s not really that hard to cause non-lethal but still significant damage.
My friend suffered a kidney injury in a car accident. Within seconds, bystanders had called me using her cell phone (my number was the last she had dialed, they just hit “redial”, in the hopes that whoever answered would want to know she was in the hospital and could contact her family), and she lost consciousness pretty quickly as I was talking to her, trying to keep her calm. She later said the pain was unbelievable, and she couldn’t figure out why there was no blood - she thought she had been impaled. There was no other damage, just a (to use the surgeon’s word) “pulverized” kidney. It was removed in surgery within the hour; there was no saving it. Nothing penetrated her, it was just the force of the impact. Blunt trauma to the kidney is nothing to mess with.
