Ok I used play the piano but now have decided to try the harpsichord (a real one not a keyboard).
However, unlike Pianos, which have their own stores in the mall, Harpsichords seem to be in short supply, and a search seems to turn up lots of ‘kits’.
I have limited space in my apartment. Should I buy a ‘virginal’? Does it sound the same as a harpsichord?
Is playing the harpsichord similar?
I don’t play harpsichord or similar plucked keyboard instruments (though I’ve taken some years of piano lessons), but I’ve heard them played quite a bit and know people who play them.
Yes, AFAIK the playing style of the harpsichord and of harpsichord-like instruments such as virginals and spinets is pretty much the same, although differences in stringing and keyboard compass produce differences in tone and range. All the harpsichord family instruments sound more like each other than any of them sounds like a piano, for instance.
I would say that you shouldn’t even think about building a harpsichord from a kit unless you’re a serious woodworker and/or instrument maker.
Harpsichordists I know have reported positive experiences with Harpsichord Clearing House in Rehoboth, MA (USA). I personally have no experience with them, not being in the market for a keyboard instrument myself. They sell virginals etc. as well as harpsichords, and could probably give you knowledgeable opinions on which type of instrument is right for you.

If I had an insane amount of money, could I buy a brand-new, authentic harpsichord?
LOL - none listed on Amazon, but a few are listed on ebay - kits.
