Pick 12 fictional characters to repopulate the earth?

… and non-fictional.

Or rather, not clearly fictional. My bad.

Good choices. But does Teela count? She started out human, but then turned into a Protector. Which version sets the parameters?

Kim, OTOH, is an excellent choice. So is Conway Costigan for that matter.

We really don’t need kick-ass types. James Bond would be a total waste of space in a “rebuild society” scenario. Ditto Emma Peel, Elena Montero, Lara Croft, etc. What we will need are the farmers, builders, planners, and pluggers.

If James Bond and Emma Peel were only kick-ass types, then I’d agree with what you said. However, they bring much more to the table than that. They’re also highly intelligent, they’re in great physical shape and they have excellent genetic stock. (Dude, we’re talking about Emma Peel here!) Emma Peel also has an abundance of scientific and scholarly skills.

They’re the types who could very well adapt to rebuilding the earth.

But I’m not fictional! If anybody gets to do the breeding thing with Emma, it’s me!

What would he need guns for? For hunting, he’d just grab a thimble, a piece of string, a digital watch and an ordinary household cereal packet, and construct a trap that’d bring down a woolly mammoth.

…and breeders. James Bond, Emma Peel, Lara Croft, no contraceptives… do I need to draw you a picture?

I’ve never seen Bond reach for a condom, and AFAIK he’s never had a kid. My bet is he’s sterile.

Come to think of it, we’ve never actually seen him have sex…

I just realized… Mr. Bond probably has all sorts of diseases in his system. He might not be a good choice after all.

You really think they won’t have to fight to survive? Besides, as noted, Emma Peel brings a knowledge of science and Elena Montero would bring culture (dance, the arts, and other fine skills taught to a woman of her station. Lara Croft I can’t justify really, but she is a capable fighter and good at deduction.

However, they will have to fight for whatever territory they claim and fight to get food on the table, so, yeah, there will be a need for ass-kicking.

OK.
The Men:

John Clayton. AKA Lord Greystoke, AKA Tarzan. We’ll leave Jane behind since she’s pretty useless, but no big deal. Just conk him on the head and he’ll forget all about her.

MacGyver. Yeah, we need a mechanic.

Miles Vorkosigan. Sure, he’s crippled, but his genes are healthy. His kids will all be handsome musclebound geniuses.

James Bond. An amoral psychopath, but capable of doing pretty much anything.

Jack Burton. When the going gets tough, you know what Jack Burton says?

Jean Luc Picard. We’ll need a leader type.

The Women. Since we need to reproduce like crazy, the women should be selected for their…er…stimulating qualities.

Emma Peel, from The Avengers. Omnicompetant secret agent in a leather jumpsuit? Hell yes.

Sarah Connor. Yeah, we need the “motherly” type. Proven breeder and survivor.

Dagny Taggert. Somebody’s got to make the new planet’s railroads run on time.

Eliza, Duchess of Qwhlm, from Stephanson’s Baroque Cycle. Confidant of Liebniz and Louis XIV. Proven breeder.

Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman. Already adapted to roughing it on the frontier. And she’s a doctor.

Dana Sculley. Scientist, doctor, FBI Agent. Proven breeder. Nuff said.

“Good in a fight.”

Who are we fighting?

I need someone good at hunting, gathering, building from scratch, cooking, herbal lore, stuff like that.

Teela Brown, well, are we sure that what’s good for Teela is good for the future of the race? Thing is, it ends up working out to Teela’s benefit, no matter what.

So:

Haleth, because she led her people through the worst times of the First Age. If Morgoth, and rampaging orcs won’t keep you down, you must be pretty tough.

Vash, because she pissed off Q, and lived to tell the tale.

Ayla. No technology is not new ground for her, you know.

Sarah Connor, because she’s been there, done that.

Ishtar of Tertius, because we need a good doctor/geneticist/mother.

Sacagawea, who ought to be legendary, but unfortunately was real. She would be worth writing a novel about, just to qualify her for the list.

Conan is out, he wants to be king. So does Aragorn.

“Lucky” Jack Aubrey, because we just might want to build and sail a boat.

Davy Crockett, the fictional version.

The Count of Monte Cristo. Just for sheer determination.

Gulliver Foyle, even without the Jaunte. The common man lives!

Can’t think of any other guys.

Tris

Doc Savage has no sister.
Patricia “Pat” Savage is his cousin.

How about Gilligan?

Seriously, I would consider Mary Ann and the Professor too.
Just let them know that can screw like bunnies now.
Mary Ann is a farm girl and can cook great stuff with minimal materials.
The Professor was MacGuver before MacGuver existed.

Jim {What, they’re really not bad choices}

The human; the Protector version is disqualified due to being unable to breed and superpowered ( 10x IIRC human strength, godlike intelligence ). If her luck qualifies as a superpower, she doesn’t qualify in either incarnation.

We’re going to need hunters and people to fight off the rebounding wildlife, not to mention keep the peace.

Lois Lane : “Oh no ! A tiger; it must have escaped from the zoo ! Superman ! Super - uh oh …”
< CRUNCH >
< Tiger eats Lois >

Thandi Palane : “Hey, that’s one of those ‘tiger’ things, isn’t it ?”
< CRUNCH >
Thandi Palane : “Hmmm, meats kinda stringy, but I like the fur.”

Who cares? She’s hot.

Not a whole lot of peace to keep with only 12 people on the planet, but I get your point on hunting. Let the Savage cousins do that, with Thandi. What we need are the artistic types that can also pull their weight when it comes to building and farming. I wonder if Friday can paint?

The population will increase, and some of these people will be around to see it. Thandi has had the prolong treatment, which means she should last 300 years; Lazurus Long a few centuries; Ludmilla is immortal; and so on.

I forget…does Ludmilla’s symbiote pass on to her kids? I’ll have to dig out the book again…it was a fun read.
