Pictures of my trip to the Arctic

The first thing you notice is how cold and clear and bright everything is. The only thing that remains, is ice. Everywhere.

And no matter which direction you look, it’s just more ice for as far as the eye can see. Shackleton and his men would have cursed the desolate landscape, had their survival not taken precedent.

Not all of the ice is clear; much of it contained sediment from somewhere:

Walking all afternoon, there were no signs of human existence. Just strange shapes in the ice.

While there were no signs of human existence, aliens had certainly been here before. In what must have been a need to shelter their craft from the harshest of conditions, they obviously built this curious structure, rising up from the only vegetation to be found for miles.

Did I say arctic? Because I meant to say Wilmette Harbor, near Chicago. But it sure feels like the arctic!

Heh, you got me! I was going to mention my parents’ trips to Antarctica and northern Canada, where mom waded in the Arctic Ocean.

I’m glad you’re enjoying the winter. I was only truly scared of the wind when I was in Chicago; here it gets cold but it’s less chilling somehow.

I like your pictures! What’s the “curious structure”, it’s a very nice building.

We haven’t had a winter here. No ground frost to speak of, and no snow. I hope we don’t get anything now, the early spring plants are starting to bloom everywhere. The daffodils have even ventured out.

It’s the Bahai Temple. There’s only eight Bahai Houses of Worship in the entire world, and I happen to work right next door to this one.

It’s too much of a building for any one picture to do it justice, but here’s a decent shot from the web: Bahai Temple. Here’s an aerial shot of the entire harbor (in warmer times), including the temple: Pic

I should point out, the ice shots in the OP are all of Lake Michigan. The recent storm has pushed all the ice towards shore, and small ice mountains have formed up to a quarter-mile off shore. You cannot see open water in any direction. It’s pretty awesome, if you ask me. The people I work with think I’m nuts.

Ahhh. Thanks, I thought it was a religious building but couldn’t pin it down fom the design and ornamentation.

I’m a fair bit north of you, but it’s a maritime climate, and we don’t have to worry so much about lake effects and things. I think the ice build up is awesome too. Was it anything like this ice in Newfoundland?

That’s a sweet video. That vid was the discussion of a GQ thread a couple of weeks ago. Just add a little cherry juice and you’ve got the worlds largest sno-cone maker.
