FYI, that Bugsy Malone clip has had over-dramatic music dubbed onto it that wasn’t there in the original film.
I don’t know how I knew about it, probably read about it in a movie book, but I’ve always associated a pie fight with the Keystone Kops. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7V0WUPZG24
I vaguely recall seeing The Great Race in the theatre, would have been 5 or 6, but ask me about a pie fight and Keystone Kops comes to mind first.
Just out of curiosity is there a particular kind of whipped cream to use? Nondairy? Something that doesn’t break down so fast. We are doing this at our fall festival next month, my wife and I will be on the receiving end as last year. You do get that soured milk smell but the kids at church love it so we’re doing again, also the adults can donate to the youth fund and get to pie us. Just wondering thanks!!
Welcome to the SDMB Comedic1. Just a WAG, but possibly shaving cream instead of actual whipped cream?
Might sting the eyes. Maybe a non-dairy whipped-cream.
Not if you use Johnson’s Baby Shaving Cream. No more tears!
One of my bucket list items is to get hit in the face with a pie, so I’ve looked into the matter a bit. I think custard is really the way to go.
OH! ooh! Can I be the pie thrower!
Also, avoid pecan pie. In retrospect, that was a poor choice.
Moe Howard wrote in his autobiography that during one of his public appearances, some college kid asked him to throw a pie at him. The kid gave Moe a pie that was heavy with fruit, and Moe hesitated, telling the kid that the pies in the movies were just whipped cream on plates. The kid insisted, so Moe threw the pie, hitting the kid squarely in the face. The impact knocked the kid to the floor. But Moe said the kid got up all smiles and thanked him profusely.
Just sayin’, whipped cream is lighter than custard.
I was thinking of doing a raffle at work to select the pie-er, possibly to raise money for a local food bank.
What can I say, I’m a sucker for the classics.
Somehow, that is even better!
actually ive been told that 90 percent of the time it is/was shaving creme that was used as it was light and didn’t melt under the lights
Thanks!
Ahhh I remember my first day of kindergarten, I was so nervous I couldn’t even shave.
Yes, and didn’t go rancid as quickly.
Moe also observed that the shaving cream filling was scraped up from the floor and used to re-fill the pie plates after unsuccessful takes. After a few such takes, you didn’t know what was in those pies. It wasn’t just cream anymore, but was likely to contain nails and other debris from the floor.
I think I’d rather be hit with a dense fruit pie than a potentially shrapnel-laden shaving creme pie.
During the filming of The Great Race pie fight, they actually started on a Friday, then left the set as-is all weekend (whose great idea was that…) so when the cast and crew came back Monday…the smell was, to say the least, off-putting.
There are some terrific pie fights in television as well:
