Pillows

So I haven’t been able to find a decent pillow to replace my old beat up one. I’ve bought a few different ones from K-mart and other similar places but after a night or two I’ve been going back to my old lumpy one. This has been going on for months. Anyway, anyone have any experience with higher end pillows? Macy’s has a 60% sale on pillows and I coincidentally have a $140 gift certificate for the place. Any chance I’d find comfort in a ridiculously expensive pillow?

The best pillows I’ve ever found were all pretty damned expensive, but I define “pretty damned expensive” for a pillow as ~$35-50. I like the dense foam-rubber based pillows, myself.

But where to get one? After several months of looking, I was able to buy one 2.5 years ago that was just like the one I had in high school. Now it’s getting worn down too, and the store I bought it from no longer sells them :frowning: Memory foam is like sleeping on a brick, but it’s all I find when looking for foam pillows.

I’d have to check my records, but I think the last time I bought new pillows, I got them at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Macy’s has good pillows, but I’ve but I’ve bought all my pillows lately from Target.

I’ve always liked those cheap pillows. I just keep buying them every 3 to 4 months after they go flat.

The tag on them says they can be washed. I’ve never tried that. I probably should tho’ to see if it gives the pillow its fluff back.

I think the the pillow height you like and the firmness/softness you prefer are important factors. Good down pillows are great if you like soft and low, or can be doubled up for soft and high. I find memory foam to be good for firm and high.

You might want to investigate an inflatable air pillow. I’ve used one when camping and was quite happy with it.

I think that with pillows, your best bet is to try and buy a couple of different ones, and try them untill one fits. The unused pillows should be traded with someone else who has the same problem, in a big Pillow-Swap.

I doubt it. You’re paying for a brand name there. And a brand name unrelated to anything pillow. You want a Calvin Klein because Kate Moss once posed in her underwear for a Calvin Klein perfume? That’s about all the credentials CK has in the pillow making business: Kate Moss’ underwear.
That pillow tries to fool people like you, that can’t find a fitting pillow, are getting desperate with stiff necks and lost sleep, and hope an expensive one will be The One. But the odds of that pillow fitting you are just as high as of a cheap one fitting you. And for the price of that pillow, you can buy and try out 10 other ones, increasing your odds by 10.

I bought a $150 marked down to $70 pillow from Macy’s once. Best pillow I’ve ever had. Though now I can’t sleep on any other pillow.

How much is a luxurious night’s sleep worth to you? I say go for it.

I’ve had a really hard time finding pillows I like. The current one I’m using is the first I can remember actually liking rather than tolerating (though it would be a stretch to say I love it). I’m pretty sure it’s a Homedics. One side is memory foam and the other side is more cushiony (I forget what the filling is, but it’s not down or feathers; probably something synthetic). For my preferences, this provides the perfect balance of firmness and softness. It sinks in easily for a bit, until the fluffy part is compressed and then the memory foam adds firmer support. All of the “fluffy” pillows I’ve tried, whether they’re down, feathers or something else have all seemed too soft to me (the firmest ones just felt weird). The pure foam pillows all seemed too firm. The combination is my “Goldilocks” pillow.

I got it on clearance, so I’m a bit afraid I won’t be able to find another one when it wears out. I should have bought out the entire stock when I had the chance, but I didn’t know I’d like it so much. I don’t see the same thing on the Homedics website now. I just hope it lasts a long time…

Check out local mattress stores and bedding outlets for pillows. They’ll often have the higher end pillows for quite a bit less than a major department store would sell it for.

My favorite pillow for the past 5 years has been my latex foam pillow. Provided there are no allergy issues, this is simply the best pillow you can get for all around comfort IMO. 5 years of sleeping only on this pillow, and it has yet to go flat or out of shape. It’s soft and firm at the same time, providing a good amount of lift for breathing if needed, but can also be squished down however you want it and spring right back to keep on looking nice.

Yes, they can be washed. Make sure that they’re thoroughly dried, though. Machine washing and drying will refluff the pillow somewhat, though it won’t be like new again.

I use several pillows when I sleep. One in front of me, one behind my back, and two under my head.

Hit up SmartBargains or Overstock.com. You can get those awesome “hotel” pillows on the cheap.

I hate shopping for pillows. Especially in person. I’m the woman who tests them on the fake beds or on a shelf. I don’t know why I do that. It’s obviously not the same experience as in my own bed with my own pillowcase. You can’t really tell through plastic.

I’m frugal, but a good night’s sleep is worth spending a little. I like a soft pillow, and am in love with my cloudlike down-alternative “Hotel” pillow. I think it was $39 on sale.

I have the ridiculously expensive Tempur-Pedic Supreme pillow. It’s a normal pillow shape with a satin side and a cotton side. The satin side is always cool. They don’t have them anymore on the Tempur-Pedic website, but do have one on Amazon for $120. It’s been the best pillow I ever owned.

I have a ridiculously expensive pillow. I bought it when I was pregnant, and I’M NEVER GOING BACK. It was like $150, but worth every penny. It’s a memory foam pillow, but I got it at the Sleep Number store. You should go to one of those stores and try them out – I’m pretty sure that part of why I love this pillow so much is that it’s right for me. They have pillows of different sizes and shapes, depending on how you sleep, etc. And you can try them out on the beds that they have in the store.

Mine’s about 2 years old, and I would guess that it will last me at least 10 years (10 years of like-new quality). And I definitely sleep better. So, yes, the right pillow can be worth spending a lot of money on!

I have a contoured Tempur-pedic pillow and I hate sleeping with anything else. I think it was $70 when I bought it, and worth every penny.

I don’t understand how those of you who bought your pillows online were able to do so. Isn’t this something you need to feel before buying? (I’m curious as my pillows are more than a decade old, so I should probably replace them.)

I switched a few years ago to a microbead pillow. Can’t wash them though…

Cradles my head perfectly, and gives me just a little lift while keeping my spine (mostly) straight. Bought it at Bed Bath and Beyond for $10.
