Pink Floyd 30TH Anniversary Mix Question

Hi Everyone

I’m getting ready to buy this new from Amazon, and I would like the SA-CD version for the surround sound feel

Only thing is: what IS SA-CD and can I play it off my computer through my Logitech Theatre system (6 speakers) and hear it okay?

Thanks!

Q

Unless your computer’s CD player is SACD-capable, I don’t think you’ll get the full experience. When I play the SACDs of Tommy and *DSOTM *on my non-SACD players they sounds great, but I think it’s because of the re-mixing/re-mastering.

This is a guy futzing around with his quadraphonic receiver comparing the various channels.

Sounds pretty good over the system, blondebear, so I went ahead and ordered the cd for $10.13 new.

As he said, it won’t put you in the “middle of the moon”, but it’s close like it sounds.

Thanks

The disc is a hybrid, meaning that it has a conventional CD layer in addition to the SACD (“super audio”) layer. If you play it in a regular CD player or disc drive, it will ignore the SACD layer and play only the conventional layer, so you will not get the multi-channel effect.

Oh well, I needed a new copy anyway. But are there computers that are actually equipped with the SA capability, Biffy? Also, after a search, I haven’t been able to find a DSOTM DVD. That would be awesome on Blu-Ray.

Thanks!

From everything I read, SACD had some heavy copy protection and no drives have been produced that will play SACD on a PC. The “Super Audio” portion is more like DVD than CD.

Wikipedia says the first 2 versions of the PS3 would play them though.

I appreciate your time and research, control-z. I did find another upload on YouTube with selections off the 30th Anniversary album, and when I set my theater system control (“For The Heart of The Sun”) to Stereo 2, I got some great separation. Especially of the lunatic’s laughter in back of me playing through the right and left channel, which, I know it also does on the original version, but somehow this remaster is just so much better/“cleaner”.

So when the Anniversary one gets here, I’ll do a comparison.

Again, thanks for your trouble!

Listen real close at the very end and you can hear the faint strains of the orchestral version of Ticket to Ride.
