Pirates of the Carribean
Terminator 3
League of Extrordinary Gentlemen
The Hulk
I have been subjected to an unusual experience. With some of the newer trailers, i keep taking a look at these four movies. Part of me says, cynically, they MUST be bad, and it just seems like they SHOULD be bad, if nothing else.
However, having seen the trailors for each of them, I have to say I’m impressed a bit. They SHOULD be really, really bad looking, trailor cut or no. But they look fun. Heck, Pirates has Johnny Depp, and Hollywood hasn’t had a good swashbuckling adventure film in a while.
So what do you think?
PS: I’m also curious if anyone has a site about the League: I was wondering who the character were, and a little history. I tried to search for it, but I strangely found nothing! (on the Internet! :o )
So, all of these films together now, am I going to be terribly dissapointed? Will my action film dreams be realized, instead?
I’m not sure about Terminator 3. I mean, Hollywood wouldn’t make another movie in a series just because it will make wads of cash, would it?
I am looking forward to the LoEG. I never read the graphic novel, but it sounds, looks fun.
Hulk should be good eye candy. I really like Ang Lee, so it might even be something more. And any movie that shows an Abrams being thrown a quarter mile can’t be bad (unless its the American Godzilla).
The pirate movie? Whatever, Disney is making a movie based on a ride…as opposed to the ride based on a movie…wtf?
Another movie I am excited to see is 28 Days Later, which is a UK zombie movie finally being released over here. I’ve seen the first ten minutes or so, and its worth a look.
I’m a huge comic book fan, but the trailers of The Hulk that I have seen really make him look too cartoony for my tastes. The Hulk himself is 100% CGI, and he looks it.
I refuse to see a movie based on a Disneyland theme ride, just on general principals.
The League of Extrordinary Gentlemen looks like it might be a lot of fun, although I may wait until it comes out on DVD to see it (especially now that I’ve got my new 47" wide screen hooked up in the basement).
I read a couple reviews of T3 from 2 people who claimed to be at the studio screening of it. They both said that it was FAR better than they expected and that is was a very god action movie.
As far as hulk goes, I have waited for that movie since I was 8 years old. I will be there opening day for sure. I don’t understand why people complain that he doesn’t look “Real”. What does a “real” hulk look like? Ya don’t know because there is no such thing. He is a comic book character who does not even have similar dimensions to a human body. I have been a die hard Hulk fan since the late 70s and I think he looks great. Check out how his muscles flex realistically when he roars.
This link from Amazon.com has a Publisher’s Weekly review blurb on the collected 1st series.
It looks like the movie version changed the cast a bit though…they took out the Invisible Man and put in Tom Sawyer and Dorian Grey. (Can’t really understand why the English government would want to recruit some dude who always looks young to be in their super secret special forces) Judging from the previews, Nina Harker doesn’t seem to lead the group; Alan Quartermain does.
The movie From Hell didn’t do justice to the original comic book series, but it wasn’t too bad otherwise. If they don’t totally butcher LoEG, I’ll be satisfied.
28 Days Later looks really interesting. There’s a lot of really good post-apocalyptic fiction out there, but I haven’t come across any movies that have done the job very well. I’m looking forward to this in spite of the reviews on IMDB.
I’ll probably see LoEG because of Sean Connery–I love that voice. He could read cereal boxes to me and I’d be happy. I was a comic book nut as a kid so I have to see Hulk. As for Pirates of the Caribbean, well I like Geoffrey Rush and that scene in the trailer where he changes to a skeleton just made me say “that is so cool!” so I have to see it. I’ll see T3, too, because stuff blows up and that’s always cool.
Pirates of the Carribean: I’m conflicted due to my love of pirate flicks and my hatred of Disney live action movies (not to mention the dubious ride-to-film transition). I expect I’ll see it eventually. But probably not on the big screen.
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Loved the comic. VERY unsure about the changes. That said, I must see it in a theater.
Hulk: F/X worries and changes to the story aside, all I’m saying is give Ang a chance.
T3: The trailers kinda leave me cold…it looks like a rehash of tired one-liners and action cliches. But I have such fond memories of the first two. Besides, what I really want is for Arnie to wear the crown of iron before he follows in Ronny Regan’s footsteps…
Its not much “based” on it. It look more like someone went through the ride, saw one particular set on the ride (and those of you who’ve been there and seen the trailor should know) and was inspired for a story.
Actually, that looks like it will be the best of them all. Swashbuckling, derring-do, and pirates. It has Johnny Depp, for God sakes. He may not be infallible, but he’s a darn good actor and he;s prefect for the quirky pirate role.

That may be, but honestly, the series didn’t exactly age well. Its not even in syndication that I can see, and that’s telling.
None of these look like they’ll change my life, but then, it’s only $6 and two hours.
That being said, League looks like it’s going to butcher the comic. Typical case of hollywood thinking they have to either dumb-down or extreme-ify good writing in order fopr the unwashed masses to appreciate it.
I admit that I’m not exactly fluent on the comic, but most of the things noted as changes by other posters don’t exactly seem to be dumbed-down at all.
Does anyone know if the sad-walking-away-music is going to be included in the Hulk? The movie just won’t feel finished without Bruce walking into the sunset with the sad-walking-away-music playing.
For all those complaining about the Hulk being CG: There is no other way to do it. Big muscular guy with green makeup? Not nearly big enough. Blow him up using forced perspective? The square-cube effect will catch up to you, and he’ll move all wrong. Animatronics? Not nearly smooth enough, and expensive as Hell to boot. Yes, they’re changing his origins somewhat, too, but then, they did that with Spiderman, and everyone (comic book nerds included) loved that one. I’m trusting Marvel on this one.
Terminator 3 is going to be an eye-candy movie, but then, what would you expect? So were the first two. As long as it has big explosions and hot babes, it’s fulfilled its purpose.
I don’t really know anything about League. It looks cool to me (anything with Sean Connery can’t be all bad), but judging from what I’ve heard from fans of the comic, they did make some pretty extensive changes.
And as a general rule, I try to completely ignore Disney lately. They don’t even have a lock on the kid’s animation market, any more, and they were never all that great in the live-action department.
