Pit racers?

I’d like to know a little more about these small-displacement motorcycles. When I did a Web search I found mostly warnings about racing around in the pits, which wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. I would like to know:

  1. How do pit racers differ from ordinary minibikes/scooters?
  2. Who likes them? Do they appeal to a certain age group or sub-set of motorcycle enthusiasts?
  3. Is there popularity on the rise, holding steady or declining?
  4. Are there any good Web sites devoted to pit racers?

I would also like to know:

  1. Why do I keep spelling “their” incorrectly?
  2. Why do misspellings remain invisible after hitting “Preview Post” but become glaring obvious after clicking “Submit”?

But those questions belong in another thread.

I believe what you are referring to are more commonly called “pocket bikes”

In Japan, were motorcycle road racing is about as popular as Nascar here, children start off racing pocketbikes in the same way that our children start out racing go karts.

I would say their popularity is growing here, since we seem to have seen somewhat of a growth trend in motorcycling in general in the US lately.

however, they don’t make too much sense for aspiring adult racers…you are going to spend 3-5K for a pocketbike, engine work, etc. to make it competitive…and you could go buy a good, competitive used motorcycle that has been converted to track use for the same price.

I think they are great for kids who want to get into roadracing though

FYI–do a search on google for “pocket bikes” and go from there
