this is a place that literally glorifies race baiters, the mentally ill, communists etc.

I’m familiar with the standard conservative tropes confusing acknowledgement of racism and racial discrimination with “race baiting”, and confusing liberals with “communists”.

But in what way are you suggesting that the SDMB “glorifies” “the mentally ill”? Are you just referring to the general liberal principle that mental illness should be acknowledged and treated rather than considered a shameful stigma?

Or is what you’re talking about the baseline SDMB position of rejecting homophobia and transphobia? You’re not really still trying to defend the position that being gay or transgender is a mental illness, are you?

In my mind homosexuality and transexuality are almost invariably mental disorders/illnesses. Now whether they are caused by environmental or genetic factors is irrelevant, it doesn’t change what they are, mental illnesses. […]

to be an illness to my mind it does have to cause harm, and I think both transexuality and homosexuality do. […]

Lot’s of people do indeed just consider these things “traits.” I’m sure someone born with a genetic disorder that has them lacking arms, legs, proper functioning kidneys et cetera may think of these things as “traits” and they are, but they are negative traits (and can be called deformaties, mutations, and genetic disorders) and the properly evolved human body doesn’t posess those traits

There’s no such thing as a cisgendered woman, there are regular women who do not have a mental illness and men who have the mental illness that causes them to believe they are women.

Because I had thought you later walked that back somewhat:

My opinion on that has evolved, I used to feel it was medically irresponsible to allow people to modify their bodies due to dysphorias, as there are other forms of dysphoria where we would actually step in to prevent the patient from doing this.

Is this another of those situations where somebody seems to have made some progress in overcoming reactionary views but then relapses right back into them as soon as they feel provoked about something? Because it’s getting more and more difficult to blame your current rhetoric on your hypothetical asshole brother-in-law.
