You’re right that that post was out of line, and I would have moderated it if it had been reported. But that doesn’t excuse your own post almost two weeks later. Regardless of what someone else says to you, don’t call people nutters unless you’re in the Pit.
You and I have no way of knowing if any of the people reading your post are familiar with that usage, so it doesn’t matter.
agreed. will save it for the pit.
(my emotions get carried away when innocent people, children and adults alike, are mauled to death every 2-3 weeks, and many are pit owners…and, yes, I do care about pit owners, their children and other family members. I wouldn’t wish the 2 testimonials That i linked to above, from the past 2 weeks alone, where pit owners are mourning their loss and begging other pit owners to not own them - on my worst enemy. These aren’t misidentified or mistreated canines - the owners had them for many years )
As I typed the above, a family in Kansas had their family pit bull maul their baby girl. She has life threatening injuries, and was just air lifted via helicopter (typical to pit bull maulings) to a larger hospital.
She was just 2 days old.
Life threatening injuries on a new born baby is very likely the kiss of death.

How many more, Pit Bull defenders / deniers? 41 a year? 51?
Just as sure as I am this baby will die (and become the 14th fatal pit bull attack, out of 15 total, - the other solo was a German Shepard -so far in 2013), I can absolutely assure you the parents will accurately state that they had the land shark for X years, and it would only lick you to death.
Nanny dog?
Not human aggressive?
Not a pit bull (despite the owners saying it was)?
Thanks for the cite, cougar58. Very interesting.
per comments on the Montgomery chronicle posts someone said they are cutting the dog open to retrieve the leg. Seems the new father of the 2 day old girl was holding her when his pit bull tore her leg off, 35 minutes after the baby girl arrived home.
q: what canine breed has 5 legs and a tail?
a: a pit bull
confirmed leg amputation

family had their pit bull euthanized after it took their baby’s leg off while in dads arms
“Breaking” news? (A break stick is a device used to open a dog’s mouth to force release of another dog)
I hope this headline was unintentional.
one more month before 2013 is half way gone
and the score at halftime, is:
14 people killed by Pit Bull type dogs in the US so far this year, out of 15 total (the other was a German Shepard) 8 of them children, 20 out of 22 fatal pit bull mauling’s last year were children.
In fact, 20 children were murdered by dogs last year in the US and ALL by Pit Bulls.
Stats on pit bull attacks in 2013:
(400) breeds of dogs in the USA;
(1) type -pit bulls -have 14 fatal attacks
(399) the sum of all other breeds had (1) fatal attack so far in 2013, combined
13 Lifeflights…one every 6.92 days.
14 DBRFS one person killed by a pit bull every 12.98 Days.
20 Darwin attacks: Every 4.1 days an owner requests a 911 response when attacked by their own pit bull (5 stab Offs, 2 taser, 6 shot by police/rescuers).
I have a question for those of you who object to pit bulls. Let’s assume we can prove for a fact that pit bulls (however defined) are the world’s most dangerous breed. What would you have done with them? Kill them all? And say we do eradicate pit bulls…another breed will then be recognized as the world’s most dangerous breed. Then what? Kill all of them?
What do you who object to the breed see as a solution?
*All dogs *must be neutered and no breeding- unless by registered & licensed breeders. All dogs.
This is kinda where I’m at. Even if we accept the extremely dubious statistic that every single fatal attack is by a “pit bull” (and not one of a dozen other powerful bred-for-fighting types), what do people think will happen if they’re banned? Powerful, scary dogs trained and abused to be capriciously violent will disappear?
Pit Bulls had an image as the family dog for a reason, back in the day, after all, while Standard Poodles were used for guard dog and junkyard dog type applications. Even as late as the 1980s in my neck of rural America, pit bulls were the dog you let your kids play with–it was ROTTWEILERS that were the scary man-killers, don’t you know. Entirely and solely because they were trendy among shit owners.
DrDeth’s proposal at least tries to get at the root of the problem–but remember, licensed and businesslike “puppy mills” still exist. Terrible pet store dogs come from somewhere, and that somewhere makes a lot of money to keep it that way.
why do we have to provide a solution? You want a pit bull fine. I’ll be standing over here shaking my head. Don’t care if it shreds your arm or kills your kids (insert some kind of Darwin Award comment here). If your dog gets loose and presents a problem then I’ll deal with it as the situation requires and hold you responsible.
Well, certainly you don’t have to provide a solution. I was just wondering what solutions people were interested in presenting. Not mandatory to respond.
Ironically, that’s basically all the responsible pit bull owner wants. Glad we’re in agreement.
Ban, with grand father clause.
More pit bulls are euthanized in city shelters, than in cities like Denver than banned pit bulls via confiscation. See link below.
No other breed filled the murderous void left by banned pit bulls in Miami Dade in 24 years now (they banned them in 1989, and voted 63% to keep the ban last year).
1.) Mandatory spay/neuter of pit bulls
2.) Definition: Am Staff, Staff Bull Terrier, APBT and their mixes ( more detail below from actual BSL legislation)
3.) Grandfather clause for existing pit bulls that are registered within 30 days (no felons)
(Apologies to the “pit bulls and parolees” crowd)
3a.) Must be muzzled when off property, and secured to person in charge with 2 D-loops and a leash rated at 600 lbs secured to persons wrist and belt. Person must possess a “break stick”. Person must be between 21 and 70 years of age.
3b.) Must be kept in a fenced enclosure while in owners yard, 8 foot high, with fence lid.
3c.) Signage “Pit Bull on property”
3d.) Any disfiguring, dismemberment or fatality results in mandatory jail time (Lillian’s Law in Texas). Even if it’s a Darwinian family mauling.
3e.) Per the current Maryland ruling, grandfathered pit bulls are deemed “inherently dangerous”, therefor pit bull owners AND landlords are strictly liable for damages from said pit bulls.
3f.) In addition to the current airlines that ban pit bulls (Air France, United, Delta, American, Alaska Air), all airlines will be no longer allowed to handle pit bulls.
3g.) $1 million in liability insurance for grandfathered pit bulls
3h.) Any person(s) who allow(s) a grandfathered pit bull to lick, be in close proximity to, to mingle with, or to sleep with, a child under the age of 6, will be charged with felony child abuse /endangerment.
3j.) Any person(s) who allow(s) a grandfathered pit bull to lick, be in close proximity to, to mingle with, or to sleep with, a person over 70, will be charged with felony elderly abuse / endangerment.
4.) Police are authorized, at officers discretion, to shoot on sight any loose Grandfathered pit bull on, off or in owner’s property while responding to a call, or pursuing a suspect, or conducting an investigation.
5.) EMT’s are to wait for armed police to arrive before entering a residence with a grandfathered pit bull, regardless of risk to resident from fire or injury or health related issues.

In Ohio, just hours after Ohio lifted its declaration that pit bulls were vicious, Makayla Darnell was killed by her mother’s pit bull
HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost
In just a few months after Ohio lifted this designation, 4 Ohio humans were mauled to death by pit bulls.
Note that many individual cities in Ohio are allowed to ban pit bulls, despite the state ruling.
Miami-Dade County, which banned pit bulls in 1989, has avoided fatal dog attacks in the 24 years since, from any breed, which dispels the myth that if you ban pit bulls, another deadly breed will crop up. Other Florida counties — prohibited by state law from regulating dogs by breed — continue to experience deaths and disfigurements due to pit bulls. Since 1989, 18 Florida citizens have been killed by pit bulls — none within Miami-Dade.
In comparison to Miami-Dade with it population of 2.6 million, let’s look at Rusk, Texas. Texas, like California, does not allow BSL. In tiny Rusk, Texas, with its population of 5,000 (both welcome signs are on the same post) – a place most dopers have never heard of, there were 2 fatal pit bull attacks within a year. Texas and California lead the USA in fatal pit bull attacks.
Influential pit bull advocates have supported regulation in the past and are doing so now. On its Facebook page, the Villalobos Rescue Center, founded by Tia Torres of Animal Planet’s Pit Bulls & Parolees — expressed support for a proposal in Louisiana on the heels of a mutilating attack on a woman by her own pit bulls.
Since California’s anti-BSL law, HB 428 was passed in 1989 a total of 35 California residents have been mauled to death by pit bulls. Just three months after the passage of HB 428 seventy year old Margee Lilly died of a Darwinian pit bull mauling, that her grandson owned. Governor George Deukmejian said “I am disturbed and distressed as anybody…We have to have some kind of law against owning them or some other way of completely controlling them”

Concerned about the increased number of pit bull attacks in recent years, San Bernardino County officials are proposing an ordinance that would require owners to spay and neuter their pets.
In the past five years, four people have died due to injuries from pit bull attacks in the county, according to the county’s Animal Care and Control Division. Just this year, six attacks involving pit bulls were reported, including two that involved young children who died as a result.
No other attacks or deaths were reported involving other breeds of dog, according to the agency.
“It’s clear we have a problem,” said Supervisor Neil Derry, who is introducing the proposal along with Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt
For those who claim pit bull bans will result in millions of pit bulls being killed, note that cities with BSL kill fewer pit bulls than those that do not allow BSL:

You’ll be lamenting the danger of rottweilers next, and working your way through each breed that is latched on as the next “in” dog for people who want aggressive dogs. It’s not the dogs, it’s the owners.
I realize it’s a crime to talk about anecdotal observations but I’ve watched pit bull puppies play with other dogs. Normal playful stuff… then the pit bull puppy goes bat shit crazy. No warning that the other puppy could pick up on. Same behavior from pit bulls owned by people who don’t tie them up all day or train them to fight. No warning at all and the dog goes bat shit crazy.
For reasons I can’t explain, dog owners can’t see it in their own pets. Of the 2 people I warned specifically they ended up having the animal destroyed after a serious attack. So I’ll say it yet again, it’s not the aggressive behavior. Any dog can be aggressive from time to time. it’s the nature of how it plays out once it starts. Pit Bulls take WAAAAY too long to stop.

Some of the pioneer city’s, such as Denver and Miami, have had bans on pit bulls over 20 years, and never expanded them to include Rottweilers.
14 people killed by pit bulls so far in 2013; 1 by a German Shepard. Zero Rott fatals in 2013.
While Rotts are 2nd place to pit bulls in fatals in the USA the past 10 years, it is a very distant 2nd place. Pits have avg’d 4 to 6 times as many kills as Rotts. While 2nd place may fluctuate from year to year (Husky’s with 3 a few yrs ago, GS with one this yr), first place has always gone to pit bulls the last 10 years.
Pits are on track to kill 30 humans in 2013, one every 8 days. Rotts avg every 91 days, and for 2013, its zero.
Iowa cities lead in both Pit Bull bans (64) and Rott bans (10).
Its both the dog, and the owner. Too many pit bulls have killed either their owner (adult Mike Cook of Tuscon, Adult Bad Rap member Darla Napora of CA, adult Joseph Hines of Indiana, Savannah Gragg age 9 of Indiana) and many many more pit bull owners who neighbors and relatives testified loved their pit bulls and treated them right.
Just last week I linked a Facebook page of a woman, Brooke Weeks of NC, who stated:
"Thanks for continuing to keep Will, myself, Justin and our whole family in your prayers. This was something I never expected to happen and did everything I knew to prevent this. I was one of those people who has stood by the phrase judge the deed not the breed, or it’s all in how they’re raised. Unfortunately i had to learn the hard way that that’s not true at all Brady couldn’t have had a more loving and caring family but he did what pit bulls do and I will never advocate that anybody get such a dangerous animal I never want anybody to learn this horrible lesson the way my family has. "
There are countless Darwinian fatal and dismembering attacks by pit bulls on their owners or owners family. Every year. Period.
So nix the claim about “only bad owners”. Its either an accurate claim or its not. There is no warm - its hot or cold, on or off.
And I can cite dozens and dozens of fatal and/or dismemberment pit attacks on family that negate that claim, with testimonials that they raised the pit bulls in a loving family.
Darla Napora and hubby Greg, felt so strongly about pits getting a bad rap, that they moved from Yakima, WA due to its ban on pits, to Pacifica, CA - CA does not allow bans. They then joined BAY AREA BAD RAP - a society whose goal is to educate the public that its the owners, not the breed.
Then one day, Darla Napora’s pit bull, that she slept with, disemboweled her in her house, and ripped her unborn child out of her womb and shredded it. The 911 responders required weeks of counselling.
Hubby Greg was so convinced it wasn’t the pits fault (“just a fluke”) he buried Darla in the same casket as the killer pit bull.
Why, oh why, did I promise the SDMB mod’s that I would never use the N-word again (that rhymes with butter)?
