Let Down is currently the song that is effecting me most from Radiohead. I still have to go with Fake Plastic Trees as the Radiohead song that evocs the most emotion in me.

Well the telephone was ringing,
that’s when I handed it to Liz.
I said it isn’t who it would be,
if it wasn’t who it is.

“When I am king you will be first against the wall,
with your opinions which are of no consequence at all.”
This line made me smile like crazy the first time i heard it
I almost feel like i did write it, I have so many people who
need to be first…
From my favorite BNL song, Call and Answer:
“I’m warning you, don’t ever do
those crazy messed up things that you do.
If you ever do, I promise you,
I’ll be the first to crucify you.”
The whole tone of the way it’s sung is what makes it, though. The whole song is kind of depressed, and it kind of builds up to being somewhat hopeful, then they smack you with that warning. It’s a great song.
Great pithy lyric Anticay!!!
I like it so much I want to know who sings it… (I suspect I might go “Doh!” when you tell me though ~grin~)
~~ It’s radiohead again… Paranoid Android
Cool topic!
How’s about
It’s been 10 years
and a thousand tears
and look at the mess I’m in
A broken nose and a broken heart
an empty bottle of gin.

Seeing Radiohead in concert was one of the most powerful and emotional things that have ever happened to me.
more gripping lyrics.
*I feel better, I feel better now you’ve gone.
I got better, I got better, I got strong.
I feel better, I feel better now there’s nothing wrong.
I got better, I got better, I got strong.
Tell me something, tell me something I don’t know.
Tell me one thing, tell me one thing, and let it go.
I got something, I got something, heaven knows.
I got something, I got something, I don’t know.
The line “Yellow matter custard, dripping for a dead dog’s eye.” is from a well-known playground song. Not the whole verse.
Eh, I always thought it was “like Sting I’m tantric, like Sting guranteend ot satisfy.” I guess that’s my Sting bias coming through.

And visit their graves
On holidays at best
The ones who love us least

Gotta agree with the Billy Bragg mention too. Another from him.
I woke up this morning, to find that we have outlived the myth of trust.
Great stuff, great thread.

Somewhere buried in the Anthology videos, George Harrison talks about this song. Just the first line you quote, the “yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog’s eye”, is from a song all the Liverpool kids knew. George quotes the whole thing but the only other part I can remember at the moment is the last line, “wash it all down with a cold cup of sick”. As far as I know all the rest of “I Am the Walrus” was written by John.
Thank you Venkman and pepperlandgirl for your information regarding “I Am The Walrus”. This is very interesting.
“I Am The Walrus” was released as a single on November 27, 1967, so I have believed that “yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dogs eye” was an act of creative genius for 34 years (minus a few days). And all along it was a “sample” of a common kid’s song… amazing.
Well, I’ll be comforted in the fact that the rest of the lyrics in the song are just as creative… just not as evocative.
“The last horizons I could see are now resigned to memories
I never thought I’d still be here today…
Drink enough of anything to make myself look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves”
I thought of you as my mountaintop
I thought of you as my peak
I thought of you as everything
I had but couldn’t keep
