I have fond memories from the late 80’s / early 90’s of a white (Alfredo?) sauce that Pizza Hut used to serve with their breadsticks. I recently heard Pizza Hut had brought back their white sauce, but it turns out this is a white garlic sauce of a more recent vintage, and does NOT taste like the much older sauce.
Now I’ve REALLY got a hankering for the sauce that I remember. Googling hasn’t helped me much, turning up references to the newer garlic white sauce. Does anyone else remember this vintage of white sauce? Or better yet - have a source to buy from, or a recipe to recreate it?
I remember that! It was a simple Alfredo sauce. There are numerous recipes on pinerest. It was almost gravy like in consistency and no garlic flavor. I think it could be reproduced with experimenting. One day I shall do this.
These days I get their white sauce in place of the battery acid red sauce on my pizza from them. The red sauce was so bad I would get cancer sores every time I had their pizza.
I find the trend of ‘chunks’ in sauce for pizza to be distressing.
Beckdawrek - you and I remember the same. At least I am not crazy! I have tried googling for a copycat recipe but have had no luck. It seems like everything comes up with their current garlic sauce, rather than the old alfredo style sauce. If anyone knows of such a recipe, it would be much appreciated!
Try Land O Lakes Alfredo sauce, that’s what the local pizzeria shop used for their white sauce. It’s super creamy and cheesy, totally instant chronic heart disease in a can.
The early '90s is when Pizza Hut shifted from making and prepping food in restaurants to having food shipping from a central location.
While the restaurants used to get cans of tomatoes and purée and mix them with the company’s spice packages, or make their own garlic bread in house, that stopped in favour of using cans of prepared sauce.
So it’s very possible that whatever restaurant you went to made its own sauce with some variation from the company-approved standard, which is why you can’t necessarily replicate it.
At the Pizza Slut I worked at we, as often as not, would send out Caesar salad dressing instead of alfredo sauce if someone wanted a white sauce. Sometimes the red sauce would end up being spaghetti sauce instead of the pizza sauce.
