Someof you helped me with the problems I’ve been having with my computer. I greatly appreciate it. I’m a computer moron. The only formal training I’ve had was in college 23 years ago.
I ran the ad-aware and spy-bot programs. They helped quite a bit. Turns out there were over 800 spyware programs on my hard drive, all installed within the last 3 days!
But after having them removed, not everything is 100% yet.
I ran a virus program and found there are 15 infected files on my computer…also all installed in the last 3 days. Most of the viruses are worms and trojans.
Now heres my problem…when I try to clean these viruses off, I get a message that the file is “non-cleanable”!
Now what? My computer doesn’t seem to be under attack my a zillion ads, but it’s running herky jerky, probably becasue of the viruses!
What can I do! Help!
A decent anti-virus program, configured properly, should quarantine those infected files. However, if those same files are essential – either to the operating system or programs – you’re going to have continued problems.
If the affected files belong to the operating system, just do a reinstall. The infected files are quarantined and should no way interfere with the reinstall.
The same applies to files belonging to a program. You should not have a problem with an application reinstall.
OTOH, if the infected files are data files, kiss them goodbye. It’s too difficult for the average person to recover them properly once infected and the anti-virus program quarantines them.
BTW, in the future it helps to state the particulars: computer O/S, software program(s) in question, yadda, yadda. Advice varies depending upon the particulars.
Hi pkbites
Any chance you remember the names of any of these virii? Often times, there are fixes for them. Sometimes, it’s a simple matter of deleting. Knowing the name of the virus helps.
What are you using for your virus scanner? Have you tried an online virus scan from Housecall ?
That’s what I’m using! The viruses it picked up all say non-cleanable" next to it. Answer me this: now that house call has found them, are those viruses quarantined automatically? It doesn’t say.
My computer is an IBM Aptiva E Series 545. Pentium 3, 13 gig hd.
I’m running Windows 98.
Some of the viruses are: TROJIPTHIEF, TROJAIMTOOLZ, AND WORMIPG2.
aRE YOU GUYS SAYING i SHOULD JUST RE-INSTALL WINDOWS?
I don’t know how much important data you have on your computer and the amount of software that is installed but if it was me I would re-install. It is not that hard and before you begin ask for some help herer. Your computer will run like new and you are better able to regularly run some of the anti spyware programs and an AV program to prevent this from happening again. 800 hits on AdAware is about 550 more than I have ever seen.
If it won’t let you delete the files but you know which files they are, open them in a text editor (WordPad should do), select all and replace with something, perhaps the text constituting the posts of this thread, and see if it will let you do a save. That ought to disembowel the little fuckers pretty good.
