Il s’en faut beaucoup (far from it!) Stuyvesant is a public
HS in NYC which specializes in the sciences. I think in
L.A. we’d call it a science magnet school.
As for the ghetto you must be thinking of the Bedford/Stuyvesant neighborhood. I haven’t been to NYC but I’ve heard its an area where you have to watch your step.
Of course I understand in the old days it was muggers you had to be afraid of, now it’s the police.
Just to complete the hijack, there is a Stuyvesanttown in Manhattan, a subsidized housing complex for low-to-middle income folks (and, unfortunately, some people who are willing to lie about their income to get into a pretty good complex with cheap rents).
Yea, Peter S. and his clan got around.
BobT, I think you’re right about The Hague. One thing to point out is, the full name of The Hague, in Dutch, is 's Gravenhage (my atlas renders it 's-Gravenhage). But I think this usage is rare; a friend of mine lived in The Hague for a year and had never heard of it. The common usage is Den Hage or Den Haag (I can’t remember which one is the correct spelling.
Den Haag is correct. Believe it or not, it means “the hedge”.
