Can a Credit Card & a Bank Card, one that draws from one’s bank account,be identified by the 16 diget number? Credit Cards are protected by the $50 liability law, Bank Cards are not. Can one tell by the number alone which is which?

Carl

AFAIK, yes. This is why you have to be awfully careful who you tell your credit card number to.

I’m a banker and I know of no way to tell a traditional credit card from a debit card just by looking at the number. I’m not saying there is no way, just that if there is, it is not common knowlege.

BTW, some banks (mine included) DO offer the $50 liability limit on check cards. If more consumers demand it, more banks will offer it.

After all, what is your hosts’ purpose in having a party? Surely not for you to enjoy yourself; if that were their sole purpose, they’d have simply sent champagne and women over to your place by taxi. – P. J. O’Rourke

I’m sitting at my desk at work eating a bag of French Onion Sun Chips and looking at a list that gives me the breakdown between Debit and Credit cards (for the ones our bank offers). The first 6 numbers will tell me whether it’s a debit or credit account.
