Well, he can put the price at whatever he wants, but note his positive feedback is only 75% and he has no bids. So his greed will most likely go unrewarded.
There may be frenzy out there, but it doesn’t look like it’s completely over the top irrational damn-the-torpedos-full-speed-ahead frenzy. Most people are able to say Dude, :dubious: .
Well, sure…as someone said upthread, the market sets the price, not the seller (ebay is a perfect example of how this works). If you set the price too high, you aren’t going to be very successful. I wouldn’t call the guy a vulture. Well, maybe he THINKS he is, but he sure doesn’t know how to go about it.
Just wanted to update this thread: I actually got a 20 GB Playstation 3 on Friday, December 1st. I had taken a half a day off to do a little Christmas shopping and while I was in the Best Buy in Timonium getting my wife a Roomba and picking up some DVD’s for friends I figured I would ask about the consoles.
I asked the sales lady first about the Nintendo Wii and she said they were all sold out so then I asked “Well, I guess this is even less likely, but do you have any Playstation 3’s?” When she didn’t smile and say no right away, I was stunned. She said “Hold on, let me get a manager.” The manager told me that they had just gotten their truck in and there was unexpectantly one (1) PS3 on it. They had been told they weren’t getting any more until January so they weren’ expecting it at all. He said that since I was the first person who had asked for it, that I got it. The manager went in the back and brought out the console but left it in the plain brown cardboard box so as to not cause a riot with the other shoppers.
I picked up a second controller, Tiger Woods 07 and Resistance: Fall of Man. No less than 4 different Best Buy employees congratulated me. I felt like I had won a contest or something. The cashier asked me if I was putting it up on Ebay, and I told her no way, I’m keeping this to myself. All told I spent a little over $600 on it and the extras and even though it’s going to be my only Christmas and Birthday present this year (My Birthday is January 3) but it is so worth it. I’m going to ask my family for some more games for it in lieu of other presents.
Gee, after all that bitching I did earlier, I feel a little bit lame even posting this. Oh well, I’ll just have to let the warmth and soft humming sounds radiating from my new PS3 comfort me. Ahhh, that’s better.
Sounds like a lucky and cool ending, Madd Maxx. Congrats.
There’s so much blame to go around here. Personally, it would be great if every jilted potential PS3 owner got a Wii or Xbox. Sony pulled this same shit with the PS2. I absolutely refuse to believe that a company as large and with as many great minds as Sony can’t do better launching their consoles. After the PS2 debacle, they had several years to figure out how to do this better.
Sad thing is, people are used to being treated like doormats by corporations. They’re blaming Target and Best Buy, when Sony needs to be punished for botching yet another product launch. Let’s face it, in a few months the drama will pass and they’ll continue their market dominance. I am no Microsoft fan but I don’t recall people having a very hard time tracking down an Xbox; they should be rewarded for properly managing a product launch.
And I don’t care if Sony had problems with the chip makers or whatever. You’re fucking Sony, surely you can apply pressure where necessary? I was interested in a PS3 - I got a PS1 and a PS2, but I’m disgusted by Sony’s market manipulation. I hardly play the PS2 anyway, but if I do upgrade it will probably be an Xbox for this very same reason. There was a time when Sony was the best and only game in town - remember Walkmans? - but I’ve seen other electronics companies best them. I have Toshiba, Aiwa, Philips, and Acer components replace my Sony stuff and they work just as well, if not better.
I think what happens is that when a company has been on top for too long, they get complacent and start trying to cut corners and hope no one notices. Eventually people get pissed off, and the company either manages to turn around or they fuck it up more and go bankrupt.
I still maintain that the PS3 is not especially well engineered. Time will tell, but I will be surprised if Sony doesn’t lose a lot of market share.
As for those vultures, there are quite a few idiots trying to sell their PS3s for anywhere from $10,000 to $21,000,000. Yes, that’s 2.1 * 10[sup]7[/sup] motherfucking dollars. I suspect if someone actually manages to get that much money, he’d blow it all in Vegas in a week.
They were fighting to make the christmas season. If Sony could have made millions of units they would have. I have followed the progress over the last couple years and I was seriously wondering if they were going make christmas or not.
The general sense I’m getting from various viddeo-game forums now is that PS3s aren’t too hard to get (new shipments sell out within a few hours), while Wiis are still white-hot popular (new shipments sell out in 30 minutes or less). eBay auctions for PS3s also appear to be levelling out at around $750-$800, which might indicate decreased demand/scarcity.
Damn, it makes me wish I’d stood in line to buy one, just so I could sell it for that damned much money. Forget the 21 mil, that’s a pipe dream, but $10K+? Hell, for that damned much money, I would personally fly to the city of whatever idiot was willing to shell out the cash and give it to him personally. Right after I got my briefcase full of cash, of course.
