Playstation 3

Hopefully this hasn’t already been posted elsewhere… a quick search turned up nothing. Sony has unveiled the Playstation 3. Details and pics can be found here and here.

Any thoughts on it? They don’t have an estimated price, which is unfortunate. It doesn’t look like it’ll be cheap. I’m glad that it’ll be backswards-compatible with the PSX and PS2. But honestly, my biggest reaction from the pics was from looking a the controller. It just doesn’t look like it’ll be comfortable to use.

I like the controller design. Bet if you throw it out of frustration, it’ll come right back.

I’ll spoiler box this due to mild sexual humour.

The controller looks like some sort of future double dildo

If I want the less shiny and nowhere near as sleek version, will they lop a hundred bucks off the price?

I can’t get too excited about this. Last I heard this was going to cost over $300, so it’s out of my price range. Usually the first games for a system aren’t as good as the later ones. I don’t need a dvd player/mp3 player/multimedia can opener right now.

When’s the new gamecube coming out?

That article seems to mention once that the system will output 2 teraflops, then later it claims 218 gigaflops. Am I missing something?

And yeah, the controller puzzles me, too. It seems as though the long handles would force you to hold it at a strange angle, but I guess it’s hard to say right now. At least it’s a redesign, though.

Looks like it’ll be coming out mid-2006 or thereabouts. It’s called the Revolution, and not a huge amount is known about it. E3 is on Wednesday, at which point I would imaging lots more information will be available.

Here is some info on Nintendo’s new console.

They are going to miss the 2005 holiday season.

I’m sorry to say, but after 10 years of resisting Sony’s advances (minus the PSP in a moment of weakness), I am now owned by Sony. 2.0 teraflops from the processor? 2.0 teraflops from the graphical processor alone? On the one hand, I don’t think there’s any way it could be less than $300. The GPU alone has to be worth double that. I realize that they always sell consoles at a loss (with the exception of Nintendo), but $300 seems like it’d be a hell of a deficit to come back from.

The XBox NeXt may actually come out cheaper.de from that, I’m not actually sure the PS2 lauch titles are going to look very good.

I think they’re adding the 218 GFLOPs of the CPU and the 1.8 TFLOP figure of the GPU together to get 2.

Those controllers… the console… they’re so pretty.

I just got a PS2 for Christmas, and I’m salivating at the PS3.

RE: uncomfortable controllers: I thought the same thing about the N64 controllers, and they turned out to be fine. I think we’d have to log some game hours before we judged these. And hopefully, if it’s going to be backwards-compatible with all of our other stuff, surely we can use our old controllers?

A note: The reason it only can handle 7 wireless controllers and not eight is because, in a bluetooth network, there can only be 8 devices. One of them must be the console.
So one person in your 8 man game has to use the wired.
A second note: 2 HDTV outs. Woah. Single console multiscreen. Sweetness.

Yeah, but who has 2 HDTVs ready for that kind of display? It is pretty sweet though, and no doubt on some episode of Cribs we’ll see the latest 11 year old psuedo-singer sporting two 52 inch HDTV panels on either side of the Escalade he can’t drive for another 5 years hooked up to the PS3 inside… what was I saying? Anyway, the thing looks awesome. I’m torn between buying a PS2 now and waiting until later to get the PS3, or just waiting until I get the PS3. Spring of 2006? It seems so far away…

I have just seen the E3-demo of the PS3 title “KillZone”. (I assume it will be named KillZone 2, but right now it is just KillZone).
The graphics were absolutely jaw-dropping gorgeous.
I will try not be an early-adapter this time around, but I am afraid I won’t be able to resist.

Yeah, I see that now. Sorry, I think I was suffering some kind of brain problem. :smack:

I must say that this might be my first Sony-made gaming product. I thought about getting a PS2 for a long time to complement my collection (I still want to play Ico, among others). Perhaps this will be my first venture into the world of owning more than one console (in one generation). I hope the controller isn’t as bad as it looks, though.

I must admit that the thing that pleases me most about this announcement is that it stole Microsoft’s thunder to such an extent. Last time they claimed that their hardware was outrageously more powerful than everyone else’s to the point that they might as well give up, then it turned out to be not that much better. This time, they again acted as though there’s no conceivable way anyone could match them in raw power, and it looks like they won’t be able to claim that any longer. Their boasting is just a bit more obnoxious than everyone else’s to me, so this is good news.

I just watched the whole Sony press-conference and … I for one, am amazed. I’m a long time follower of games on any platform, and I expected something decent, but this is way beyond that. Not that I’m surprised - few console makers managed to dominate three generations, so they’re up for a serious challenge; but they’ve taken it really, really seriously this time, and if anyone knows that half of Sony Corp’s complete earnings and most of its profit has been coming from the Playstation franchise for a while now, that’s hardly surprising. I didn’t expect to be wowed by the presentation this time, but … wow.

Unexpectedly, perhaps what amazed me most was that demo with the water and the eye toy …

I was at the press conference yesterday. I kept laughing at all the obvious digs at Microsoft … particularly the heavy emphasis on BACKWARDS COMPATABILITY.

The general consensus on the developer boards where I hang out is that Microsoft is SCREWED.

(BTW, they showed MY game, so now I can talk about it somewhat freely! Check out the footage of Warhawk. We’re the title with the flying battleships and the thousands of airplanes. That’s all real-time baby … no pre-rendering there!)

You’re doing Warhawk? All I’ve read so far on game sites is how awesome Warhawk looks. That’s so great. And it really is real-time, huh? This thing is going to kick ass. I heard them saying that it’s supposed to be easier to develop for than the PS2 was. Not that that’s saying much. Of course, I’m just a player, not a developer, so what do I know?

Does anyone know where we can get screenshots of the games? I only managed to dig up a few snaps of Outbreak (zombie somethingorother) and that motorcycle racing one. I can’t remember where I read it, but the consensus I’m getting from folks who attended both the XBox 360 premiere and the PS3 premiere is that Sony totally spanks Microsoft here. I’d like to see some screen shots to compare.

And the new controller looks like it’ll be a bit painful to hold for long periods…

Hello, my name is Slacker, and I’m an excellent beta tester.

For the curious, there are lots of jaw-dropping vids at gametrailers.com. Here’s the aforementioned Warhawk:

And one I’ve never heard of, but DAMN. After I saw this, I changed pants, and immediately calculated how much I need to save per month to get a PS3.

Motorstorm

Holy crap…one word. Uncompromising

I’ve been getting excited for the XBOX 360. If this thing is as capable as a media hub as the XBOX, I’m sold.

Any rumors on how far behind the XBOX it’s rollout is expected to be?

I’m dying to see the price points here to learn if I’m even in the ball park of affording one of these.

I need to buy another plasma now…sigh

Whoops, that was obviously supposed to quote Pochacco.

And note that Gametrailers.com is choking at the moment, but it’ll likely be working better soon.

IGN has a bunch of stuff up.
