I may have a Grandmother and an Aunt somewhere who I have never met.
Some background…
My mother was born in Kenogomi, PQ in 1934. My mother was around 8 years old when her father remarried. At the time she had a sister. When her father remarried he took her (my mother) and the new wife and moved to Fort Edward, NY, leaving her sister behind with the ex-wife (my mother’s mother or my Grandmother).
She never saw her mother or sister again and to this day does not know if either one is still alive.
I have done countless searches on the net and cannot locate either one. I may have a Grandmother and an Aunt out there who I’ve never met and this tears me apart. Aside from my mother, I have no other relatives to communicate with (I have no brothers or sisters and my father died when I was 17 and his family has never been a part of my life).
If anyone thinks they can be of assistance please send me an e-mail. My heart aches when I think about my mother wondering if her mother and sister are even still alive.
I have my Grandmother and Aunt’s maiden names. It would mean more to me and my mother than you could ever imagine if someone could help.
If I make any progress, I promise to faithfully update this thread. And if there should ever be a reunion , every one of you would be invited.
This may not be much help, but have you tried calling the public records office in Kenogomi? I honestly don’t know where it is, or whether they have them, but that’s usually the best place to start.
If either ever owned property or paid local taxes under thier maiden name you might find a tax or property record that gives you a good lead.
Well, you could try the Directeur de l’état civil office for one or maybe the diocèse de Chicoutimi would have some records if your grandmother was Catholic. If all these fails, perhaps you could try contacting the Mormons, they did a thorough survey of the province of Québec’s records a few years ago.
If you haven’t already, you can search many Mormon records online at www.familysearch.org. They also have thousands of research centers in temples around the world (addresses searchable on the site); it’s free to look, you can order microfilms for a minimal fee if something isn’t on site, and they don’t proselytize. Really; I’ve used the center myself.
