I’m glad I have no children, I’ll say that. The future of the young will be a hellish one. Everywhere, not just here.
In 2016 it was kind of a surprise and Trump was thwarted by the government around him. Career government workers who knew he could not do the things he wanted (because laws).
One item in Project 2025 is to fire all those people and replace them with Trump loyalists. Yes men/women.
You say he can’t do that? I say the Supreme Court gave him immunity to do whatever he wants. Who will stop him this time? Congress which is also majority republican?
This is a golden opportunity to grab power and they mean to do so. They have literally planned for it and shared that plan.
ETA: And nothing Trump does suggests the slightest bit of restraint in his pursuit of power. Not a smidge.
If something being poorly planned and doomed to fail means it didn’t happen, then Trump’s entire first term was not a presidency.
Maybe not “in this thread,” plenty are on this board in general.
So am I, because I’d honestly be a bit worried about them given your current mood. Hopefully you’ll get some sleep soon.
You know “past” and “future” are different things, right?
What January 6 taught Trump and his circle was where the guardrails were. And they have been busily weakening and removing them - and planning to do much, much more - ever since then. The next attempt to seize more power than allowed will be more successful.
The comparison to the Beer Hall Putsch is not inapt.
I’d love some examples.
Once again, if anybody said that in a post on the SDMB, I missed it. Could you please quote the whole post or provide a link?
Because even if I grant that you are correct (I’m not saying you are but assuming the hypothetical) the ultimate out for my position is that Trump and his cronies are idiots. They can’t pull it off even if all of the political stars align. You know those comedies where the bank robbers trip over themselves, accidently activate the alarm and open the safe only to find out Doofus wrote down the wrong day and all of the money was moved out the day before? That’s the Trump Administration.
And let’s also not forget he’s a lame duck as soon as he takes office. Well assuming he doesn’t declare the 22nd Amendment repealed by fiat and everyone says, “Sounds good to me.”
The Heritage Foundation wrote Project 2025 and they are not idiots. The power is behind the throne this time. Trump is a useful idiot.
I would not be surprised if two years and one day into Trump’s presidency Vance invokes the 25th amendment giving him a possible ten years in office.
Which “those people” and their unions will sue over, and which will take years to resolve, by which time the Republicans will likely no longer have a congressional majority.
I’ve said this in a post before. I cannot find that post to quote it or copy and paste it. So here it is again-
When Trump first ran for President and began to gain popularity and momentum, my mom’s friend Helga said ‘His rise to power reminds me of Hitler’ Normally, I would have objected. Such a statement is usually hyperbole unsupported by facts or evidence. Helg and her husband lived in Gemany during Hitler’s rise to power. Being Jews, they ended up in the camps with numbers tattooed on their arms. Despit her age, Helga still visited schools giving lectures on prejudice in general and the Holocaust in particuler. Coming from her. those words were terrifying. They are somehow even more terrifying now.
Or just keeps him around as an idol for the cultists while “interpreting” his senile mumblings however he likes.
Republicans have been union-busting for years and have been successful.
Republicans have been stacking the courts and slow-rolling dem nominations. Now they have control of the government they will fast-track rep nominations to the court which will come from the Federalist Society (hard right leaning and while assholes not stupid).
It is now likely Alito and Thomas will step down while Trump is president and he will put two arch-conservatives in who are young and will be there for many decades.
This is their chance to clinch power. Do not doubt they won’t do their level best to grab as much as possible.
Which Trump, under the 25th amendment, can dismiss by writing a note to Congress that says “nuh-uh”. Is the same Congress that you claim will be a meek, obeiscent rubber stamp for Trump’s every whim suddenly going to vote two-to-one to depose him?
Oooh, wait, I think I misread the post that was being replied to.
Still kinda strikes me as metaphorical hyperbole, though.
I need to step away from the web for a bit. I need to call my insurance company and get a new therapist. I think every poster here can agree that I really need a therapist, I hope to be back soon.
In non political news-
Both the member service number and the mental health nunber on the back of my card get me an automated message that they are closed for the weekend and to call back during normal business hours.
I work 8:30 to 5. I get two 15 minute breaks and 30 minutes for lunch. This means I will need to take several hours off to get this done. This time in which I am absent from work will get me half a point. If you reach ten points you are automatically fired. I don’t know how many points I currently have. Good times.
I apologize for the interruption. Please continue the debate in just how badly we are screwed.
You’re not alone in this.
At the very least, find someone who can give you a hug.
Err…Vance invokes it (with cabinet support). Congress can accept it or vote on it if Trump objects. Even with Trump objecting they could decide the money is on Vance and go that way.
Nothing about this congress suggests anything other than self interest.
These are experts on immigration saying that it’s simply impossible from a logistical or legal standpoint for Trump to achieve anywhere near the kind of grandiose promises he made to get elected. These aren’t problems that be handwaved away.
The first Trump admin was full of infighting, conflicting egos, power struggles, scattershot policy changes, legal squabbles, general incompetence, constant turnover, and Trump’s complete inability to stay focused. There’s absolutely no reason to believe that this time he’ll surrounded himself with hyper-competent people who will be laser-focused and 100% dedicated to carrying out his every decree.
