It’s not true that the majority of people in Europe are defending Polanski. Polanski knows that he can’t go to certain countries in Europe because the governments in them are likely to extradite him to the U.S. He’s not even that popular in France. Polls there show that 65% to 70% of the population want to send him back to the U.S. It’s not clear why France won’t send him to the U.S. It may be that they do it just to annoy the U.S.:

It’s very clear why. He’s a French citizen and France doesn’t extradite her citizens. He could have been tried in France for what he did in the USA, but I guess the statute of limitations hit long ago (I think it’s 20 years for rape, not sure).
I had wondered in fact why he never had been tried after I heard about what he did (on the SDMB, never had heard about it before), but from a single sentence I read somewhere, apparently simply because neither the victim nor American authorities had complained.
Just checked. It’s 30 years now for the rape of a minor, but it was indeed 20 years at the time.
Wouldn’t a prosecution in France by French authorities have required the cooperation of the American authorities who were (and still are) pursuing extradition instead?
All that argument tells me is that maybe her mother ought to be prosecuted along with him.

I just checked a bunch of websites and found that, although France doesn’t extradite anyone to another country if they are a French citizen, they will consider trying them in French courts for the crime that they are accused of.
uh huh. In some states there are no laws that say someone has to help you if you’re in medical distress. Yet is is meaningful of someone stops and helps. It’s the morally right thing to do.

Wikipedia is wrong about the date of Allen’s first marriage and thus wrong about the ages. He was twenty when he was married. Harlene Rosen was 17. I just checked though some biographies. The marriage was March 15, 1956.
They adopted children together. Dylan Farrow accused him of molesting her.
His first wife was 16 when they were married. Add in a normal dating time frame. He liked young girls at the age of 19. This is not a normal healthy relationship. Feel free to cite it. But unless she bumped into him at the magistrate’s office and decided to marry him on a whim it’s still a 19 year old dating at 16 year old.
Magiver, look at my post. Rosen was 17 when they were married. It’s impossible to know for sure, but they may both have been virgins when they got married. Allen was a naïve nerd at the time, not some confident playboy. Incidentally, they got married in California, where Allen was writing for a television show. Rosen flew out there to marry him. It appears that Rosen was living with her parents up to the point that she got married. They had been dating for over a year when they got married. Allen was 18 when they began dating, and Rosen was 15 or 16.
