Please help an iTunes noob watch this movie

I went to see “Star Trek Into Darkness” a few days ago, and bought the tickets through Fandango. Part of the deal was that Fandango would send a code which would allow me to download the 2009 “Star Trek” movie from the iTunes store.

I never use iTunes, but my wife does, but only for music. This is the first time we’ve used it for movies. The first mistake was downloading the HD version of the movie. I didn’t realize that my XP machine can’t do HD. (There are loads of YouTube videos that claim to be HD; maybe they lie.) It took quite a while, but I finally figured out how to delete the HD movie and download the regular movie. But now it won’t play.

It sure looks like it’s TRYING to play the movie. At the top of the screen, it says “Star Trek”, and “J.J. Abrams” on a second line, and then there’s a progress bar that starts at “0:00” and goes to “-2:06:47”. The minus sign worries me. Also, the progress bar itself is not solid, but striped, and just moves forever. Like it’s getting ready to find the beginning of the movie, but never does. Then at the bottom of the black screen, there’s the familiar forward, pause, back, and volume controls, and a progress bar that is just stuck at the start; and it foes away after a few seconds, until I move the mouse again.

Did I do something wrong? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can’t help but suspect that the file got corrupted in the download, but if I have to delete it and download a third time, I’ll probably give up instead.

advTHANKSance!

The minus sign shouldn’t worry you, that number is just how much time is remaining in the film. The striped progress bar sounds like an indication that you do not have the complete video file yet, so are you sure it has been completely downloaded? According to iTunes, the standard definition version of Star Trek should be 1.95 GB.

Or you’re missing some part of software needed to run the movie. Requirements are listed somewhere, I’d check those to make sure you have them installed. (Like QuickTime or some other element)

The movie file plays fine with QuickTime, so I’m not gonna bother with iTunes any more. Thanks for the ideas!

When you play a movie “on” iTunes, it opens up in QuickTime.
