Well, at least the hamsters had a good brunch.
The short story is that I’m looking for a job in Colorado, and I found one yesterday to which I wanted to apply, but I had some specific questions, so I emailed the contact person, only to realize today that my automatic signature was on, and highly inappropriate.
So I am still mighty embarassed. The good news is that she emailed me back anyway and now I can apply for the job…with the signature turned OFF.
I still feel like it was a big gaffe, but I couldn’t think of anything I could do that would result in other than attention being called to it. So I did nothing. And it worked out OK.

Boy, that IS a big gaffe!
And IMO you did the right thing. If they notice it and say something, then you can humbly apologize. But why call attention to it?
