Please help me find some clothes!

So years ago, I used to be large. I did most of my shopping at places like Lane Bryant, and was able to find stuff in the styles I liked: for lack of better words unisex/tomboy/tailored/simple. Things like striped shirts, solid color T-shirts, geometric patterns, etc. Nice, simple, “menswear look” without being men’s clothes. Things that would be suitable for a tech writer to wear to work and look presentable without looking at all dressy.

I went to Weight Watchers, lost a bunch of weight, and things were easy. I could wear whatever I wanted, so finding clothes of the type I like was great.

However…I’ve backslid. I’ve now gained back a fair bit of weight, and once again I’m large. But it seems like in the time I was “gone” from the plus size ranks, the styles have all changed. Now everything is tight fitting, weird patterns, ruffly, weird colors…Ugh. I get depressed every time I look because I can never find anything I like. It’s like the whole world has gone girly on me. And realistically, even if I do decide to start working at losing weight again it’s going to take quite awhile, so I’m stuck with plus size stuff for the near future at minimum.

So…anybody have any suggestions (online or physical stores) where I can look? Here are my criteria:

  1. It cannot be tight fitting. Nothing with spandex in it, nothing fitted or “figure hugging.” I hate that stuff. I like shirts that fit loosely and don’t cling. This stupid look that seems to be popular nowadays (and not just in plus size stuff) where you look like your shirt is two sizes too small and you’re going to burst your buttons if you take a deep breath…no, thanks. Usually I prefer to wear a T-shirt or similar with something like a jacket/button-down shirt/hoody over it.

  2. No flowers, ruffles, or other “feminine” stuff. I want classic, tomboy, solid color or unisex type pattern stuff. I’ve been told I dress like a lesbian, and I consider that a compliment. Men’s stuff is fine as long as it doesn’t look like men’s stuff. So anything to the more feminine end of men’s or the more masculine end of women’s would be great.

  3. Nothing that’s too hard to take care of. I’d like to just be able to wash it and either dry it or hang it up to dry.

Pants aren’t really a big problem. It’s mostly tops/shirts I’m having trouble with. Anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks!

Here you go. They’re a bit pricey but definitely not frou-frou.

I just wanted to say I feel your pain! I’m small, and I can’t find a damn thing to wear either.

I went clothes shopping yesterday for the first time in…maybe a year. I’m in desperate need of clothes but shopping makes me want to cry and hit people.
I was in search of blouses to wear with jeans. My criteria:
Nicer than a T-shirt
Not clingy or short
No cap sleeves

After trying five stores, I bought two very simple button-down shirts, one with long sleeves, the other three-quarter length. Cost: over a hundred dollars. I still kind of want to cry and hit people.

Try Plus size at Lands End.

Dung Beetle — see anything you like here? (coldwater Creek outlet) (I just bought this blouse and I look fabulous in it, if I do say so myself!)

Actually…yes! I guess I haven’t really wrapped my head around clothes shopping on the internet, but I can’t possibly have worse luck than I do shopping IRL.

Thanks! I definitely see some things I like there. (Thanks **Surly Chick **as well!)

If you have any Fashion Bug stores near you, they have large size clothing. Some things are frilly and some are not. KMart and Walmart have a lot in plus sizes, too. Once in a while I see things there that are not objectionable.

So few people look good in overly tight clothes; the rest of us look like sausages busting out.

When I was wearing plus sizes, I didn’t care much for Lane Bryant mall stores, but I ordered a lot from their catalog division, which is now Woman Within. Ditto Roaman’s. They have frilly things, but also a lot of stuff like you’re looking for.

(I also refused to wear stuff that was too tight. I don’t fault anyone for being overweight, but you don’t have to dress to show off all the problems either.)

Curse you, Ellen Cherry! I can’t resist an extra 40% off Coldwater Creek sale! And just when I’d sworn off shopping…

Get on their email as they run sales all the time. I love their bathing suits!
