Awhile back, in a thread I don’t remember, someone mentioned a book or short story that they like to recommend to friends because of a twist/shock that was so awesome, you could tell when the person reached that part just by watching them read it.
That’s all the information I have. Does anyone recognize this description? Can someone help me? I’ve been through several threads I thought it might be in, but no luck. Help! This is driving me nuts!
Anyone? Anyone?
Ray Bradbury’s The October Game?
I’m not sure if it’s the one I’m thinking of or not. All I remember is someone here on the boards saying that it was a story with a great twist that visible effected the reader, and that they liked having people read it. I know, I know, I 'm loads of help.
I will say that The October Game is extremely shocking- especially for 1948! I had never read it before. Thanks for the link.
There’s a chance it could be George RR Martin’s book “A Game of Thrones”, but if the post was talking about watching the reader’s expression change a short story would be more likely than a huge novel.
It very well could be “The October Game” because it’s been mentioned on these boards before. If you liked it you might want to check out some of Ray Bradbury’s other stories.
Maybe The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson?
Yeah, I doubt anyone has the time to watch someone read THAT whole thing just to see their face reflect a scene. Besides, there were so many scenes in that book (and in the rest of the books in that series that have been published so far) that made my jaw drop I can’t even pick one out that would be THE scene.
I was thinking specifically of Eddard’s death
Yes, that’s one. But the very first one that made me sit up and think, “Jesus! Martin’s SERIOUS about this!” was
Jaime tossing Bran out the window.
And of course, there are more than that.
‘A boy and his dog’ by Harlan Ellison.
