Please help me identify these 2 (book) quotes.

Quote 1:
Someone delivers an invitation to the protagonist, sealed with glue. The protagonist says invitations should be sealed with wax, not glue.

I think it’s fiction. Not sure if it’s glue, but sure it’s wax. I don’t read very obscure books, so it’s probably from a famous book, maybe something by Dan Brown.

Quote 2:
Someone was testing an early anesthetic (maybe kerosene or turpentine). As he was falling asleep, he suddenly had an idea about how to solve all the world’s problems, but couldn’t remember it when he woke up. He arranged to have someone beside him to record the idea when he tried the anesthetic again. When he woke up, he read, “the world is covered in a layer of (anesthetic)”.

I think this one is nonfiction.

I found this quote by William James for your second reference : Writers commonly quote the experience of William James who, while under anaesthetic dreamt he found the secret of the universe. What he was left with was the doggerel ‘Higamus Hogumus women are monogamous – Hogumus Higamus, men are polygamous.’

However, I remember reading about someone who felt that he had discovered the secret of the universe while asleep. He provided himself with pen and paper to record these momentous thoughts should they recur. The next morning he read : "The smell of petroleum pervades throughout. "

Wish I could narrow it down further.
