There’s a great quote about the birth of Soul from Gospel to the extent of : “They took Gospel and replaced ‘Jesus’ with ‘Baby’, and there was Soul”. I read/heard it different times, but I can’t remember the exact wording nor the origin. It’s ungoogleable (is that a word? ;)), keywords like “gospel soul jesus baby quote” only produce the obvious loads of Christian sites. So can anybody help?
Might it be from the book 'Pop Cult’?
FTR, I searched on the whole, quoted phrase ‘replaced jesus with baby’ and the words ‘soul’ and ‘gospel’
That looks like an interesting read, but sorry, that book was published in 2010 and I know the quote for much longer, it must be older. And yes, I should have searched the whole quoted phrase, but I didn’t trust my memory :smack:;).
I’m pretty sure that Ray Charles What’d I Say was a record where people said “How could he do that?” You might search around that, or Atlantic records.
Yeah. That’s probable. I have to get my copy of Peter Guralnick’s “Sweet Soul Music”, probably I can find it there, but it’s late here and I have to go to bed now.
