Please help me with my dry skin

I would also suggest Cetaphil like many others have, and yes, get the cream, not the lotion.
Another thing that helps me is Bag Balm. I use it on my feet, legs and hands, right after my night shower when my skin is still slightly damp.
Good luck. I hope you find some relief.

I would also recommend coconut oil and shea butter. And a mini humidifier for the office. The office kills me where I work, it is SO DRY my eyes hurt.

In my house, Vaseline is a must. Get out of the tub, slather it on while you are still kind of wet, all set.

Yep. Especially if you bathe at night, as it CAN leave a little sheen for a little bit. But this is gone sooner than you think, and by morning you are just nice and soft. I have full-body psoriasis, and vaseline helps manage it quite a bit. It’s nice that now you can even get baby-powder scented vaseline; just look in the baby aisle

Some of us black folks don’t mind that sheen…we even welcome it!

Eat two teaspoons of flax oil every day. Make sure you keep the oil refrigerated, and that it comes in a dark container, as it is sensitive to light and heat.

Yeah, on me it looks like a normally dressed person whose chest area is sweating. Constantly. :stuck_out_tongue: To be fair, I probably just need to rub that in more, but since I’m going to sleep anyway, enh.

Lotion by itself really doesn’t do anything, because most lotions are water-based.

Vaseline + lotion is what I swear by.

Vaseline doesn’t actually help that much; it just itches later. Bag Balm also itches and feels weird. I went to the store and bought a bunch of different things yesterday and changed up my regimen. Surprisingly, it actually feels better today.

I’ll keep it up and go and get the Cetaphil and try that.

There’s a humidifier on order from Amazon for the office; that is def. a must.

I don’t think I can switch my showers to night. I have been taking morning showers for about twenty years or more now, and I’m so used to it to wake up, plus my hair doesn’t really sort itself out until it’s wet - it’s curly and very thin, and tangles up like no tomorrow. And you can’t brush it when dry.

Some of it is just sheer laziness, of course. Not having lotion or something in every room, and then being too lazy to go get it. That all stops now. I am not going through another miserable winter if I can do something about it.

Oh, i forgot to say, I did change my clothes washing detergent a couple of months ago. That helped, too, so I suggest others who have similar problems do so. I went to Arm & Hammer Sensitive Formula. I used to use All, and I noticed a difference immediately.

Have you been diagnosed with eczema? Or psoraisis?

My family has both and has found Eucerin’s AHA+ lotion the best daily and the AHA+ body creme the best nightly and for knees, elbows, feet, etc. AmLactin as mentioned is great – but you can’t have ANY exposed skin from scratching, anything that could burn because it is lactic acid (midlly, but still) you’re putting on your skin. So once it’s moisturized and healed, AmLactin is a godsend.

Other good advice that often goes unheeded: warm showers, never hot. Hot showers will dry out the oiliest of skins. I know you say you take “quick” showers – turn down the water. It is a must.

Also, Krill or fish oil makes a big difference. Goat milk soap does too. As for your scalp, coal tar (generic Neutrogena T-Gel) works wonders.

Not everyone’s skin benefits from Cetaphil – mine gets very angry with their washes.

No, I went to the dermatologist, but she said it wasn’t anything in particular, just really really bad winter dryness. :frowning: Eucerin is awful and she actually warned me away from it, saying it bothers many people.

I’ll just try the Cetaphil, and I am still going to get the amLactin.

My younger daughter has always had very dry skin, even as a baby. At the pediatrician’s suggestion we eliminated soap entirely and washed her with Cetaphil.

We also use Arm & Hammer “Free” – free of all perfumes, etc. – for laundry.

I have a problem with dry skin on my legs and find the best solution for me is simple cocoa butter.

Nutrition is important, my (many!) previous skin problems have cleared up almost entirely with more fats in my diet, and supplementing with zinc. Most people don’t get enough zinc in their diet and it’s important for not only skin health but also for an efficient immune system, so supplementing in winter can’t hurt!

I have thinnish curly, fluffy hair which needs to be wet down and styled to look good, as well. But I’ve perfected my no-shower method of getting it wet and making it look nice.

Glad your skin is feeling better today! Finding the right products, and using a variety of products, should help you be more comfortable. I tend to like ‘natural’ skin and hair products a lot more because they usually have a base of plant oils, rather than silicones, sterols, etc which aren’t nearly as moisturizing. Eucerin doesn’t do shit for me. Although I do like Vaseline as a ‘top layer’.

Things are showing improvement. I have humidifiers running at work and at home. I have lotion in every room now, and most of all, right next to the bed, which is where I am most lazy about getting up to put on lotion.

I went out today and bought some nice looking castile soap.

I’ve lowered the heat on my showers. My heart breaks.

Last couple of nights I’ve had a few moments of itchiness which has been quickly stilled by a little lotion. Not at all like the misery of last year, with the burning itching pain. UGH!

Now if I can just keep it up through Feb., it should all be fine!

Thank you all so much for your help in saving this poor itchy person.

Like others, I only use soap or shampoo on very few parts of my body. Water can take care of the vast majority of your skin. Do you have hard water and if so, would a water softener be an option? I’ve also stopped drying off after a shower. I just pretty much drip dry. That way you don’t rub your natural oils onto your towel. I usually have itchy skin by this time of year but so far so good.

Do you have eczema? My daughter has it and Aquaphor works very well. It’s made by Eucerin, but is different, as the regular Eucerin didn’t work on her. Also, check into putting a couple of capfuls of bleach in a warm bath. This was recommended by a nurse, but definitely look into it before trying it.

No, no actual conditions, according to the dermatologist. I thought it might be that thing called winter eczema, but nope. Just horribly itchy skin.
