Please help! My drive stopped reading cd`s but not dvd`s. What is it?

Only up until yesterday my LG CD writer/DVD drive has stopped recognosiing cds but still plays dvds no problem. Every time i put a cd rom in it gives me the message: ‘Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application’. Obviously i have tried that many times but no success. The CD`s i am trying to use are the originals and have always worked in the past. Please can anyone help me with this???

No idea, sorry, but I pity you from the bottom of my heart.

Buy one of those CD/DVD drive cleaning discs they sell at most electronics and office supply stores. That should clear the problem up pretty fast. Aside from this, any idea what happened yesterday to change things? You could also try deleting the drive in Device Manager and letting it be redetected.

Seen this as an inquiry on a couple of computer magazines.

Apparently some DVD/CDRW have two lasers of differing light wavelengths.

If one of them fails then it will only read one type of disc.

Perhaps not quite the same situation, but I had a CD-ROM drive which would read data CDs perfectly but couldn’t play audio CDs. I reseated both ends of the drive’s interface cable and the problem cleared up. You might try this out and see what you get.
