Please help, who said "fame is the mask that eats away the face"

There is a quote which goes something like ‘Fame is the mask that eats away the face’. I’m trying to get an accurate version of the quotation and its source.

Google suggests John Updike, but I feel the quote actually goes back much further, perhaps to one of the classical Greek or Roman writers. Can anyone help? I’ve tried search engines and I’ve waded through half a dozen online compilations of ‘famous quotations’, but so far haven’t had much luck. Over to the brightest people on the planet!

Bartleby attributes the quote to John Updike like you suspected, but makes no mention of earlier references.

Michael Jackson?
