My in-laws are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary next month, and my spousal unit (their youngest son) was asked to give a toast. Neither he nor I know much about toasts (we’re not very traditional) so I told him I would try to find something for him. Any suggestions?
The particulars (not sure which are relevant):
- The in-laws are very conservative, traditional, religious old-line Lutherans.
- The most important things in their lives are church and family (four kids, three of which still live in the same town (the spouse doesn’t), nine grandkids)
- The celebration is being held at the meeting hall of their church and most of the attendees will probably be their contemporaries (with a few friends of their kids)
- We’re kind of the weirdos of the family in that we don’t live in the same town, don’t really go to church (though we’re both Christians–Spouse more devout about it than I am), and are childfree by choice–but they seem to have mostly gotten over that
- They both have dry senses of humor and would probably enjoy a toast with a little gentle humor in it–especially if it was family-based.
- The spouse isn’t thrilled about speaking in public–he’s not bad at it, he just doesn’t enjoy it and tends to babble a bit when he doesn’t know what he’s going to say next or he gets nervous, so short is probably best.
So I guess something short, traditional, and either funny or touching would be the best. If anybody could give us some ideas on what’s appropriate or point us at something on the web, that would be great. Thanks in advance!
