Please help with transferring metadata from calibre to Kindle Oasis

I’ve previously posted about my adventures using a Kindle Oasis, and have run into another annoying situation that I’d like some advice on. I have sorted my books into collections, and then by author and alphabetically. Unfortunately this doesn’t always work correctly. For example, I have the complete alphabet series by Sue Grafton. The problem is that A is for Alibi is sorted between I is for Innocent and J is for Judgment. I’ve figured out the problem, but I can’t seem to make the solution work.

Here’s what I’ve done. I downloaded calibre and looked at the metadata for A is for Alibi. The problem is that my Kindle has the metadata filed under “is for alibi, A” so naturally it will come up between I and J. I fixed the metadata in calibre and told it to export back to my Kindle, but this has not changed anything on my Kindle. Is there a step that I’m missing, or some little trick or setting that I need to change to get the metadata change to export back to my Kindle and stick? Thank you for any advice you may have.

Have you tried deleting the old book off the Kindle? It may not be overwriting if it sees the same name, even if the metadata are different.

Not sure if this fits what you are looking for, but I number the titles of books I want to read to force the Kindle to display them in the order I want to read them in. So on my Kindle you will find:

0.1 Prelude to Foundation
0.2 Forward the Foundation
1.0 Foundation
1.1 Foundation and Empire
1.2 Second Foundation
1.3 Foundation’s Edge
1.4 Foundation and Earth

The first two books are numbered differently (0.1 and 0.2) because they are prequels.

This is especially useful for long series of books where I cannot remember the order to read them in. I have all the Discworld books numbered like this which is VERY useful.

But specifically for alphabetising, I don’t know how you would get around that. You could probably fudge the title to A, is for Alibi or “A” is for Alibi and see if that works, but they are both pretty unsatisfactory solutions.

Thank you for the advise so far. I’ve run into another issue that I could use some help on. A few authors are alphabetized, seemingly by first name rather than last name. It seems to be somewhat random, and I’m not sure how to fix it. For example, here is how part of my poetry shelf looks.

Alighieri, Dante
Burns, Robert
Dickinson, Emily
Byron, Lord
Milton, John

These are all books that I side loaded from calibre, not downloaded directly from Amazon. No matter what I do with the metadata, Byron wants to end up filed under L rather B. Is there some kind of setting where an occasional book might be sorted by the author’s fist name?

ETA: I’ve tried changing the author to just Byron and that doesn’t seem to help.

You may have to edit the sort names and not just their display names:
