A man walks thru a fog bank and finds himself in an alternate universe. As he acclimates himself, he realizes that he can become very wealthy by “inventing” the zipper (or some such) and vows never to go out into the fog again

I’m thinking it was Larry Niven. I’ll pull out some books to try to verify it.
