There is a handwritten sign in the bathroom of my office building that says the following:

PLEASE KEEP THIS BATHROOM
CLEAN DO NOT PUT HAND
TOWEL PAPER IN THE TOILET
HAVE MORE CONSIDERATION
FOR OTHER PEOPLE
THANK YOU
CUSTODIAN’S

The words are all capitalized and written with the lines as shown above, with no punctuation other than the apostrophe in “custodian’s” :confused:

For some reason, I find the sign insulting. “Have more consideration for other people”? You don’t know me! Are you implying that I have been putting hand towel paper in the toilet? Or are you just flat out accusing me of being an inconsiderate person in general?

Not exactly a rant or anything, just some mundane pointless stuff I must share.

I wouldn’t take it personally, but if someone took the time to post up a sign, then some problem existed.

I’d say if you don’t engage in the activities the sign is attempting to proscribe, then it was not directed to you.

When you go into a store with “Shoplifters will be prosecuted.” signs, do you think “Are they accusing me of shoplifting!”?

I wouldn’t be offended by this sign. As Genseric notes, it’s not directed at you.

Consider that the custodians are likely even more offended that some idiot made a mess with the hand towels and left it for them to clean up.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Archy the Cockroach was found dead in the hallway this morning:(

The receptionist at the front desk was so upset that she couldn’t even approach Archy as he lay crushed on the dirty office carpet. She even went so far as deluding herself into believing that he was still alive, screaming, “The cockroach is alive! The cockroach is alive!”

I gently lifted Archy’s broken body from the floor, cradling it in a paper towel from (that’s right!) the bathroom.

I solemnly brought the deceased to the receptionist so that she could say one last farewell to our resident poet, but she was so upset that she could barely look at him as she stumbled around the office, garbage can in hand, screaming, “No! You’re not putting it in my garbage can! Why are you standing there showing that bug to me?!? Please, stop it!! Throw it into another garbage can!!!”

Yes, Archy may have slipped this mortal coil, but his poetry lives on:)

As for the sign, my main issue is with the “have more consideration for other people” part. It’s not at all necessary, and really makes me wonder the reason behind it being part of the sign. Were people in the office making repeated complaints about clogged toilets and such? Or are the “other people” being referred to actually those who wrote the sign, in which case it should say “have more consideration for us”?

Or is it Archy just playing mind games from beyond the grave?!?:eek:

Well, being one who has both used and cleaned multi-user restrooms, I’d have to say the sign means both. “Those of you who are putting paper towels into the toilets, please stop doing so, as it greatly inconveniences other users, and makes it more difficult for the staff to keep clean.” That would perhaps be a better way of phrasing the sign, but it’s possible, nay, likely, that the janitorial staff of your building are not former English majors. Incidentally, when, to make a living, you have to clean up another person’s feces because they don’t know how to use a toilet properly, it doesn’t do much to develop your people skills.
