Please recommend a modern military-flightsim and a bonus Falcon 4 question

Well my old PC has finally bought the farm, augured in, went to the great airport in the sky. Anyway, I’m going to but a brand spanking new bells-and-whistles variety and as I’m a bit behind the curve I was wondering what relatively modern military flight sims do people recommend? I say ‘relatively’ because the last flight-sim I bought was Falcon 4: Allied Force.

Preferably post-WW2 but I’m not going to turn my nose up at other recommendations, also please not one of the massively multiplayer ones like War Thunder, I’m sure they’re excellent but I don’t have the spare time to sink into one.

And regarding Falcon 4 I’m aware that new add-ons etc have come out to keep it going but the more I look into those available the more confused I get. What do people recommend to breath life back into the old jet?

Tanks in advance!

Haven’t played it myself, but I understand the current king of modern military flight sims is Digital Combat Simulator. DCS World is free but only gives you two planes to fly: the SU-25 ground attack plain, and a TF-51 trainer variant of the Mustang. From there you can buy various modules and planes to add more. Flaming Cliff 3 adds campaigns a half-dozen planes and is supposed to be relatively newbie-friendly, so the planes probably aren’t quite modeled to the standard of Falcon 4. But if that’s not enough, you can get individual planes which have been made with a much higher standard of detail and realism.

If you want to save a fair amount and are patient enough to wait a few months, all of the DCS modules regularly go on sale for pretty steep discounts. For example, Flaming Cliffs is $40 normally but has sold for $12-$14 during recent Steam sales. isthereanydeal.com lets you track prices and set alerts to automatically email you about price drops for games you’re interested in.

That does sound interesting, thanks.
