One of my favorite movies of all time.
The best introduction is still the 3-disc box set from 1994 called Never Stand Still. Sadly it’s OOP but you may find a used copy. Read the amazon.com reviews, which are spot-on.
I tried to find the fight song before they attack but I couldn’t. I think I’ll have to watch it instantly on Netflix now.

It’s a live recording from the 2003 Festival, which takes place in Mali. Not all of the artists are African, but there is some good stuff there.
Cesaria Evora, from Cape Verde, puts out some incredible music too. It’s not traditional/tribal African music, but a mix.
