For our fall break from teaching, my SO and I are driving the 4 hours from Phoenix down to Rocky Point. We rented a condo for two days, and are really excited to get away from everything for a while.
We both just moved here from Michigan, and neither of us has ever been to Mexico. I know Rocky Point is a very tourist friendly place, so I’m cool with that. Is there anything I should see or eat while I’m there? Do I need to buy the Mexican car insurance? Anything else I need to know? Neither of us can speak Spanish, is that going to be a problem?
I went to Rocky Point once a few years ago. I was actually thinking about it just a couple hours ago. It was 4 or 5 years ago, and it was all right, but kind of ghetto. It is a third-world country, and you can tell. The drive is long- you have to drive well into Mexico, and you will definitely need Mexican auto insurance. You do NOT want to be without it if you have an accident. Which is a pretty high chance, considering roads in town are unimproved dirt with very few laws or signs. Kind of willy-nilly, and nerve wracking.
The beach was nice, and we rented tired old horses to pretend like we were riding in the surf. Don’t drink any water except bottled. You won’t need to speak Spanish. You will want to go shopping- be prepared to be offered very special deals, only for you, only today. Special just for you. Do NOT bring a gun into Mexico- you will be jailed for practically ever.
I think you’ll have fun. Wear sunscreen, and I cannot stress that enough. The sun is way stronger and more dangerous than in Michigan, and you will burn without sunscreen every 2 hours.
Oh, eat and drink- seafood, of course (go down to the fish market area) and you can get small pina coladas in plastic cups for a dollar practically anywhere.
I went down there a few times back in the early 80’s. Pretty laid back, charter fishing was one of the main attractions back then. Nice beaches, good music, cheap booze. Quite a few Americans leased houses and snowbirds in their mobiles. We always bought the insurance. Never had to use it, but it was cheap enough.
