Steeling himself against the others
I think they SHOULD cut back on the space program. Not because of the tragedy yesterday, however. The question I have is what we hope to get out of it.
In my humble opinion, it just seems to me that the billions of dollars wasted in space exploration could be better spent here on earth. Perhaps for law enforcement. Or bailing out Social Security.
I’ll admit that I’m going on gut feeling here, with no facts to back anything up, and I’m prepared to get ripped for it.
Superdude, your opinions are welcome. I asked for an open forum. I just don’t agree with you. Not completely anyways.
Space exploration, including manned, has brought home many technological improvements and innovations. Even the tool you used to connect to this page was made posible by the striving for smaller, more capable, more reliable processors for computation on space craft. Some other Dopers will speak of the many medical science advances.
Plus, space exploration seems to be next logical step in Man’s ever searching soul.
But, you are right in how our priorities seem out of whack. Why should politicians get paid so much and teachers so little? Why do we spend billions on the military, but can’t protect citizens on inner city streets after dark?
Still, though, I want a space program.
