Plumbing question: Which is easier

I have a faulty flush valve on an elderly Mansfield toilet. It appears I have to remove the tank in order to replace the valve.

Would it be easier to:

  1. Remove the tank and replace the flush valve, or
  2. Replace the toilet

I’ve got some minor experience with plumbing but am no expert. I’m not particularly willing to pay a plumber at this point. It’s a toilet that can be out of commission for a few days or a week of plumbing experimentation.

Definitely easier to remove and replace the tank than to replace the whole toilet. here’s an article I googled on repairing a Mansfield flush valve. Maybe it will help.

I assume you are talking about the flapper valve. Depending on the fill tube you may be able to install a new flapper.

If not yoou may have to remove the tank. The biggest problem will be removing the 4 bolts that hold the tank on. If youo remove the tank wheen you put it back on besure to use new gaskets. And you will need to get tank tight enough with out over tightning.

If you get a new toilet you will have to assenble it including mounting the tank, so if you can get the old one off you may as well just do that.

If you remove the toilet besure to replace the seal at the bottom.

Why do you have to replace the tank? You should be able to remove the valve mechanism without replacing the tank. There are plenty of easy to install flush mechanisms available at any hardware store. It’s really not hard. I’ve done it several times.

That article is about the fill valve rather than the flush valve. But thanks for the link.

It doesn’t have a flapper. It’s a different sort of valve.

As others have said, either you take off the tank, fix the valve and replace the tank OR take off the tank, take off the toilet, replace the wax seal, install new toilet, assemble innerds of new tank, install new tank. Either way you have to take the tank off, no point in taking off the bowl to.
Now…if you’re looking for a reason to replace the whole thing, this would be the time to do it.

Okay. I didn’t know if dealing with new fixtures would be that much easier than wrasslin’ with this old thing, but I’ll tackle the tank instead. Thanks everyone!
