You two are talking past each other a bit because there are at least two ways to interpret “the Democrats”:

The Democratic Party machine: the DNC, big donors, entrenched high-level Democratic politicians, advisers emeritus (like James Carville), etc. considered as a collective apparatus.

Some number of individual Democratic politicians, activists, media members**, voters, etc. that happen to identify with the Democratic Party but do not necessarily count on the explicit support of the overarching “machine”.
