Polar Bear Spotter in Svalbard

Hm, a 3 week gig spotting polar bears. Wonder what the rate of pay is.

I know that polar bears are considered very dangerous because of their unpredictability - so I am wondering exactly how dangerous the job is and what happened to the previous guy :eek:

This is just a temporary position for a group working on cabins, so there were no previous guy.

The pay is 348 500 Norwegian Kroner per year, plus 42 400 extra for working in polar environments. This would be around 68000 USD per year before tax (but taxation is low if you work on Svalbard). So for a three-week job, you will get around 4000 dollars.

If you want to apply for the job, you will need some experience with living in the field, weapons training, “Satisfactory conduct” and “experience with polar bear security”. The last one will probably weed out quite a few potential candidates.

Polar bears are dangerous, but if you know what you are doing and staying alert, you should be safe; since 1971 only 5 people has been killed by Polar Bears on Svalbard. Any party should have a polar bear guard with them (That is a person guarding you from polar bears, not an actual polar bear guarding you… )

Original job description is here (In Norwegian)

They are considered dangerous because they are dangerous. And it’s largely due to their predictability - they have no natural enemies and regard anything that moves as a potential meal.

According to the OP’s link, however, they will probably go away if shout loudly at them; at least, that is what the guy doing the hiring believes.
