I heard that the RICO statutes may be used to prosecute Police officers in the Rampart district of L.A. Also in the news today is how several police officers in Chicago have been caught on tape shaking down polish immigrants for cash, sometimes for tens of thousands of dollars. They also would go into Polish owned shops and take whatever they liked. Someone on the news was talling about how the big fear now is that other officers in the same precinct may take revenge on those who cooperated with the investigation.
Is there any reason why hidden surveillance devices RICO and should not be used to investigate and prosecute this type of corruption?
I was very happy to see that the officers can face charges under RICO. Let me tell you why. These individuals were charged with the duty of protecting civilians. That they’d allegedly* frame, beat, kill and extort people is beyond bad. RICO, enhances sentencing up to three times the normal sentencing guidelines, and I think they rightly deserve such a punishment.
yes, allegedly is very important here. They were taped. The tapes seem to show that they were extorting money, i assume that a jury will determine if it really happened. They still have the right to a presumption of innocence and lots of other rights.
Is anyone against using the RICO laws or covert surrveillance on the Police?
