Well, I doubt the dog is profiling, but its obviously out of control, and a menace to the community it serves in. If the police cannot control it, then the dog shouldn’t be a police dog.
blur, did you read the same story I did? There’s nothing in it to indicate the dog is out of control at all. How often do human cops attack the wrong person in a tense situation? A lot. What happens to them? A reprimand if anything, as long as it was situational chaos that led to the mistake.
Nothing at all indicated the dog is a menace or anything less than a good working dog.
That’s four innocent bystanders attacked by this dog. (well, I’m assuming three plus the little boy)
That does seem exessive. Perhaps this was a badly trained or bad-tempered dog.
I think they need to find out who trained the dog, and how they trained it.
I don’t find the notion of training a dog to “profile” unthinkable. An uncle of mine had a dog that reacted by barking extremely loud whenever he saw a black person. Probably just infamiliarity, as it was born and bred on a countryside farm in a very, very white environment. The dog wasn’t agressive, but it was clear it felt uncomfortable around black people.
Putting this police dog down because it received poor training seems over the top, but maybe it needs to be taken off duty if it’s unreliable and, indeed, dangerous to innocent people.
I think that it seems reasonable to retire the dog as a police dog… but to kill it?!?
Well, it is considered appropriate to put down dogs that are uncontrollable and attack people. I think that is what the councilwoman is stating - the dog is uncontrollable. I don’t think that’s been demonstrated. At most, the dog has a bias which would make it inappropriate for police work, but not necessary to be put down, merely restrained properly.
Of course it did attack a 9 yr old boy rather than adult, which is probably why she thinks it is dangerous.
I think the councilwoman is grandstanding in this situation.
While an examination of the dog’s behavior may be in order the jump to putting the dog down is outlandish in this instance. That part was certainly calculated for its shock value.
This reminds me of my cousin’s creep of an ex-husband who intentionally trained his pit bull to bark and growl whenever he saw black people. Glad he’s not family anymore.
The police dog does sound like it may have been poorly trained or at the very least is unsuitable for police duty and should be removed. But destroying the animal sounds a little severe based on the news story and the report about this I saw on MSNBC.
I have a pit thread going on this as well just to let yall know.
