Police Misconduct and bogus Property receipt#

I got a question…feel free to answer please, especially if U are a law student or an Attorney, or U just have some information. I was a witness to robbery and a shooting. Person shot was a friend of mine. I took to the hospital right away…saved his life. Police and Detectives come and question me. I give them a statement. They ask for keys to my vehicle to take pics of victims blood. Long story short…Detective searched my vehicle at the hospital parking lot and searched my trunk. Then ran off with my keys to my vehicle. Didn’t give me a Property receipt number or a DC# for a Police report. Police impound lot damage my vehicle to a point where its undrivable. A year later this detective refuses to release my vehicle after telling me before that they can hold it for up to a year for evidence. After my mother went to meet him to discuss releasing my vehicle. He now says the case has been handed over to the DA, and its the DA now whose withholding it. My cousin is my witness who was also with me during the incident. Detective claimed not to believe my story or hers of the event that transpired. Sounds like discrimination to me…what do U suggest I do? Withholding my vehicle for a year already with No charges filed against anyone??? Oh and impound lot gave a Property receipt number last, which now pulls up No information about my vehicle which makes that number Bogus.

Moved from General Questions to IMHO, where you can get all the opinions you need, some factual, some fanciful, some WAGS(Wild Ass Guesses) and many others.

Get a lawyer.

I am in the middle of getting a lawyer. Just confused about getting a Criminal lawyer or a Civil lawyers? Since No charges has been filed…

I’d suggest consulting a criminal lawyer. He may have more experience dealing with this aspect of the law, maybe even personal contacts at the PD or DA that would help.
