Police procedure question for novel

I’m writing a novel that opens with a murdered call girl.

There’s no ID on the body, so the detectives get her professional name and the agency she worked for from someone else (a former client). Then they contact the agency manager who provides the real name and identification.

What I need to know is whether at this point the detectives need a warrant (or other document) to do the following:

(1) obtain a list of the clients who’ve booked the call girl’s services from the agency; and

(2) enter the call girl’s residence to look for further evidence.

Assuming they do need a warrant (or other document), is that reasonably easy to obtain?

Thanks for all your help!

  1. No warrant needed, unless she lives with a roomie who objects, then a warrant is needed.

  2. If the agency refuses, then a warrant is needed

Both 1 and 2 would be easy warrants to get.

Thanks so much for your reply! Now I can write the next few scenes with (some) confidence!

jtgain, I think you got your numbers reversed. Roommates wouldn’t be relevant to her professional records, and the agency wouldn’t be relevant for her residence.

Yes. Numbers reversed. Thanks…
