If you want to avoid the possibility of getting roughed up by cops your best bet is to use some common sense and remove yourself from situations where it may occur. Sure you may just be an innocent bystander when a crowd decides to get unruly and you just want to stand by and observe but a little foresight should tell you the scene is getting a bit tense and you may want to leave.
Perhaps, and there’s not much you can do about that. But surely we can agree that remaining calm and cooperating typically produces better results than acting like a raving douche?
Even the nutto who wrote “The Anarchists Cookbook” back in the 70’s said to never resist police (until society falls that is then they are fair game). He wrote that what you do is fall to the ground in a fetal position, hands over your scalp/face in your knees to protect your face. If you can get your back up against hard object (that way blows can’t hit your spine). Your goal it to take the beating with as little permanent injury as possible. In addition, if the cop is videotaped, that position will never be thought of as provocative in any way.
This guy was a nutto and thought police should be killed and even HE said never fight back against police.
I certainly have the right to self defense. Even if I can’t prove it was self defense in court, I’d rather be a hero in prison, than just let some cop possibly cripple or kill me.
While I’ve had some interactions with rather brusque cops, I can’t say I was beaten by any of them during any of the four or five times I’ve been pulled over in my life.
How many times have you interacted with police? How many of those resulted in beatings?
I had one when I was about 25 years old. I was with a friend who was driving. he made a legal U turn. The cops pulled him over. They wanted his license and registration, even though he did not do anything illegal. I was in the car minding my own business when his partner pulled the door open and ordered me to get out. He then wanted my license and registration. I asked him why ,since I was not driving. He said ,because I told you to. I told him I would not give do it. I had no legal reason, license was valid and clean. I just resented getting pushed around. He got furious and aggressive. I told him he had no cause to ask for my paperwork unless being a passenger in a car was illegal. It was escalating when his partner whispered to me you better do it, he will beat you with his flashlight . So I backed down . I felt I had a right not to be harassed by cops with no probable cause. Back 40 years ago we felt we had the right to protect ourselves from illegal police actions. There was no cause.
If I am going down the street , legal and minding my own business, i expect the police to leave me alone. That is not too much to ask, is it?
Where the hell do you people live? Yeah, sure, it happens once in a while, but for crying out loud, it’s not like it’s a common occurrence! I have NEVER had a bad incident with a cop and neither have any of my friends or family. But then, I don’t do stupid stuff like get mouthy, or refuse to give some form of ID to a cop when asked (he has the right to ask, you know, you legally have to give up your name).
I kind of think it’s the people who do stupid illegal stuff that have all these issues with the cops. Stop being a dumb ass and it’ll stop happening.
I am a swarthy and sketchy looking son of a bitch. Yet, somehow I rarely attract police attention, and when I do, it always ends with, “have a nice day!”
