Political Compass #60: No one can feel naturally homosexual.

Strongly disagree. What is “natural” anyway?

Strongly disagree.

I think some people that are hedging with “disagree” are missing the point. The question is not whether you think ALL homosexual feelings are “naturally” felt but whether you think “natural” feelings of homosexual attraction are flat out impossible.

Unless you think it’simpossible for homosexual orientations to be natural, there’s no need to qualify your disagreement.

I think you have something backwards here dude. Your explanantion indicates you should be ticking Disagree

Since it’s a question with a binary answer (Possible or Impossible), I personally just didn’t feel that it was worth stating Strongly.

It is impossible for sugar to not be sweet. Disagree. Anything is possible dependent on outlook. As such, I just don’t view it as really worth getting riled over, particularly not when there is evidence to support the non-validity of the statement.

The DSM is meant to reflect the standards of the community at the time and homosexuality was in there as recently as 1970 so I don’t think that’s a very good argument for homosexuality and against necrophilia.

Well, I was talking more about psychopathy which is a mental illness every bit as much as diabetes is a physical illness (as reflected by the standards of today’s medical community). And I am not arguing “for or against” homosexuality or necrophilia: I am only relating the research which demonstrates beyond reasonable doubt that homosexuality is not a choice but occurs as “naturally” as dark skin or diabetes. Personally, I consider that sexual attraction towards human cadavers might be a little different to homosexuality in that different cognitive modules might be involved (ie. that there would be no adolescents who showed a vastly greater immediate neurological response to pornography involving corpses than other pornography, whereas homosexuals and heterosexuals do respond immediately and exclusively to all female or all male porn.)

Incidentally, what was your score and response?

This was my attitude as well.

“The earth is flat.”

Disagree.

“The second ammendment to the constitution should be removed.”

Strongly disagree. With sugar on top. And a slice of lemon. And an uzi.

Some things are worth getting riled up over, others aren’t.

Strongly Disagree. If the gay people themselves say that they feel naturally homosexual, who am I to argue? To each his own, live and let live.

First time poster. I believe the OP asked for first person accounts of burgeoning gay awareness, and I haven’t seen any yet, so here goes.

My gay (male) feelings precede puberty by several years. Not that I had any notion of what to do about it, but I was fascinated by certain other boys and, somehow, with the idea of boys, as early as age 7. I have some ideas as to why, but I was not molested nor had any other traumatic experiences that have come to light. I was told by someone else that my mother had hormonal difficulties when she was pregnant with me. There were circumstances in my early life which made me feel very isolated, which may have contributed (it’s a long story so I won’t bore you). In any case, I have yet to see any research that gives strong evidence of what causes people to be gay (or straight, as the OP notes). I think, from considerable reading and personal observation, that there are a multitude of influences, in a matrix that may be too complex to ever analyze.

I took the question to be asking whether I believe that gay feelings are in some sense organic (i.e. the complex matrix of influences noted above), or whether they are manufactured by some sort of conscious intent. So I strongly disagreed with the question the way it was phrased.

Thank you for your attention, it’s been lovely.
